have had this truck for 2 weeks now (first diesel). it did not start the last time it was real cold outside. well tried for a little to long and fried the starter and replace it, along with the batterys. i also changed out the driver side glow plugs. only the rear one was bad on the passenger side. i dont know if any where bad on the driver side as i tested them wrong. it was about 45 degree the day i got this done and the truck fired right up. i thought it was weird since i never really replaced anything it needed really. so today i was going to test it since it got down to zero last night. sure enough it would not start. but that is just when the fun started. turn the key to shut the starter off and it wouldnt shut off. kept turning over even with the key out of the ignition. run to my garage to pull the cables off and by the time i got back the starter had quit and was smoking (good thing it has a 3 year warrenty). i thought maybe the fuel was gelling in the lines, so i went and got about 17 gallons of 70% #2 and 30% #1.
so i guess my first question is why did the starter not shut off?
my second question is what is next to check? the since last time it was trying to start and would jump but wouldnt start, while this time nothing but turning over.
how long did you leave the key on before you tried to crank it over? Gp relay will stay on for about 2 minutes before it shuts off, I always let mine sit until the led goes off, (GPR LED MOD) fires up every time, also lets you know that your GPR is working properly. I have no idea why it kept cranking over and over with the key off and out! sounds like an eletrical gremlin to me....
In Kamloops BC, it got down to -20C over night a couple of times, and it took a while for the glow plugs to warm up and hesitated to start up but it still started.

there is no plug-ins at work. also i bought this truck to haul my car, well if it gets cold at the place i go to, there usually are not plug in at hotels.
When it is cold the GP's can remain operating for up to 2 minutes after the WTS light goes out. Last winter I was using dino oil, on really cold days I would wait 2 minutes before starting the truck. If it did'nt fire right away I would repeat the process. This winter running syn oil it has started up much easier.
What glow plugs did you get Bosch (motorcraft) or AC. It only takes a few for it to start hard, but all 8 work great. Also ditto on the syn oil. Where are you at? I'm in wisc. we've had plenty of cold start days this year.
I have same problem and always I change one batery After when i change both batery no problem with starting. I buy tree diesel and always they sell to me with bad batery walmart have good deal 72 $ each 3 years replacment
still cranking the selonoid contacts are arcing shut, sort of like welding best to replace it cause it won't give you full current and likely to stick again.

could that cause a no start situation? like if the engine was just not cranking fast enough?
IF you change two batery should be enough power.IN winter time when temperature droop down you have to plug truck to warm up.Its 13 q oil in engine when is cold oil is frozen and hard to start.I have tree powwerstroke if two batery is good should start in cold weather too.
I'm guessing you used the right batteries, no less than 750 cc amps each. Are you getting any smoke while cranking? The Wait To Start light is just a guide, the GP's stay on much longer. We don't get that cold here, but when it does drop down low, I will cycle the GP's for a minute or so, cycle again for a little while and crank while the fuel pump is running.
Never a good idea to crank on these things more than 20 seconds or so, then let them cool down before trying again. You will want to check you wiring from the batteries to the starter for signs of over heating. You will need a new started solenoid.
If you can check you battery voltage while you are cranking would tell us a lot. Should stay above 11volts.
ITS evrything normal just on cold weather plug to power to warm up engine before strart or you been cranking for nothing.TRy couple time just turn the ignition dont crank.Fuel pump flushing fuel on hole system and return too fuel tank.Dont change glow plug this glow plugs dont causing bad start.I recomended buy sccaner for powerstroke you save lot of many.
