Hi. I'm new to the forum. I just bought a 1996 F150 ext. cab with a 351 in it. Good truck, ran great until I began messing with it. It failed e-check with a P0401 code. I pulled the EGR valve and cleaned it. The valve inside was froze up, and after I was done, it seemed to be freed up. I re-installed it and hooked everything back up. Now the engine is missing like crazy at idle, wanting to stall. It does better when I'm driving it, but only when it's up to speed.
Now it gets weird. I took the valve back off, and it doesn't appear stuck in either position (open/closed), and when I pull the vacuum line off, the truck runs perfectly. However, since I live in Summit County in NE Ohio, I'm not allowed to remove the EGR valve. I have to keep it to pass emissions. Any thoughts?
Sounds like the valve is opening at idle, and it shouldn't. It should only open up at speed, then close at idle.
I'm not familiar with what controls the EGR valve, so not sure if you switched a line or the valve that controls the EGR is stuck and allowing it to open at all times. Time to back track a bit.
Thanks for the reply. Went back and double checked, but everything was re-installed correctly. Wondering if maybe the problem is in the pressure sensor?
My '96 Extcab has a 302, so not sure how much is plumbed the same? I just got it a month ago, so I'm just getting back into all this emission crap myself. Luckily I'm in Stark county and don't have Echeck.
when I pull the vacuum line off, the truck runs perfectly.
That's the key piece of information there. Did you put your finger over the vacum line when you pulled it off the valve? If so and this fixed the problem then it suggests the diaphram inside the valve is leaking, so the valve will have to be replaced.
Ok. Freed up the EGR, replaced the pressure sensor and the EGR solenoid (sp?), and it's running good now. Ran the dianostic and got a P0402 code (too much flow from EGR). I'm not sure if that code is still in there from before I replaced these parts. I cleared the codes, and I'm going to drive it around for a bit and see if any other codes come up. Worst case, I replace the EGR too.
So, my next fix... how the heck do I get the gauge cluster off so that I can figure out what's wrong with my check engine light. It won't come on, and that's another reason our wonderful friends at ECheck failed me.
