Couple of things to think about.
What will your insurance company say about the flat bed? Most will say it needs to be insured as a "commercial vehicle". This could increase you rates.
What will the school say about the truck with a flat bed, same issue as above and may impact you getting a parking permit.
If your truck is a SRW you should not have a problem finding a good stock bed for it cheaper than a flat bed. Remember that a gaser bed will work.
I personally would get another bed before I got a flatbed. That is unless you really have a need for it.
BTW Welcome to the great state of Tennessee. Also insurance is way cheaper here and tags are only $22 per year. You won't have any problems here if you decide to get a flatbed.
I would keep my eye out for a replacement bed. You have a pretty wide year range of beds that will fit, I think the beds from 87-97 are the same from any F150, 250 or 350.
I just saw one a few months back in craigslist with zero rust and good paint going for only $300

damn, i'm jealous, i'm about to shell out $58 to register the honda for another year. virginia is evil and makes you pay for vanity tags every single year. and i have vanity plates on both and love em too much to give them up...they are amusing
can't complain about insurance though...$60 for both ain't bad.
