Guys I pulled my dash cluster out to troubleshoot the instrument lights (which led to even more troubleshooting of someone's science experiment of a wiring job behind the dash!!!) and when I did I noticed that the speedometer cable has no positive means of ensuring that it stays connected to the speedometer. . .previous to this we have had no issues with the speedometer not working, but that doesn't seem right to me. . .I'm used to seeing a knurled, threaded ring that you thread of the speedometer input. . .
. . .my speedometer doesn't even have threads to accept such a ring though. . .there is an ~1/4" groove on the speedometer where the cable slips over it, but there is no quick release feature on the cable either. . .it just slips over the speedometer input and that's it. . .
. . .is this normal or am I missing a part??? I've looked in my LMC, NPD, and Bronco Graveyard catalogs and I don't see anything like what I think is missing though.
The speedo cable has a retaining tab on it. When you look at where it attaches to the instrument cluster, you should see a white plastic "sleeve" with a rather large lock tab that slips over that groove you mentioned. I could lift the tab up with my finger on mine and presto!! The cable came right out.
It is possible that yours has been broken off...especially if a screwdriver has been used to pry it up.
Thanks for the link ShamelessMT. . .that part is definitely missing. . .looks like a little trip to the junkyard is in order with some wire cutters in tow!!!
