Muffler
I want deeper, louder sound, but don't have a lot to spend. I am considering Magnaflow, Flowmaster, Roush (if I can find just the muffler) or another namebrand that won't break me. Dual outs or single? Whats the difference with the power, sound SO vs. DO? Will mileage and performance increase more with one vs. the other?
Tips
Turn downs just before the axle? Or use existing pipe and add a nice tip?
I am really stumped. I know its a lot of questions, but I 'd appreciate your opinions, experience. Thanks.
I have seen that one. I have seen a lot of videos on youtube with pipes. I think I like the Magnaflow sound best, but still looking for a much lesser expensive option. I may end up at a mexican muffler shop.
I just don't see why everyone loves true duals so much, especially on a late model truck. On a truck like my 74' F-100 duals make sense but not a late model truck because you have to route everything down one side of the truck making it an unequal length system.
The 5.4l will make very good power with a single 3" catback exiting in the stock location. A single 3" will be less expensive than a dual exit and true duals in most cases. One of the least expensive but still good cat-back systems on the market are the Flowmaster cat-backs. A flowmaster kit with the 50 series muffler will yield a good sound like the OP wants. I have a FM cat-back on my truck and it was easily installed in the driveway. If you like the look of dual tailpipes get a cat-back with si/do muffler. I prefer a single system though. Flowmaster, Magnaflow, JBA, SLP, Rousch and etc. all make good cat-back kits that will sound good. The 5.4l sounds good with pretty much any system.
I just got my exhaust done on the F250, 5.4l. I just went to the shop and told him what I wanted (exactly what the OP wanted...) and here is what he said; "Let's throw a Flowmaster super 44 on and dump it out at the stock location with a 4" tip. Alot of 5.4 drivers like that setup, sounds good and it's cheap..." I said ok, and he was right. Relatively cheap, below $200, sounds awesome. To my ear anyway.
Decided to go with a Flowmaster 50 Series SUV and a rolled chrome slash cut tip behind rear passenger tire. I couldn't wait for Internet order and didn't want to get stung by cheapo muffler shop. I like the sound. It is hardly audible in the cab, but seems to have a sweet spot at 1800 rpm. Its just loud enough that I can tell a difference. Thanks to Ken's Mufflers in Dallas at Fitzhugh and Central. They ordered my muffler at noon, it was in the shop by 2. I was in and out in 40 minutes (Ed installed) $215. Good shop. Can't wait for it to break in. Thanks all for your posts. I am a happy guy!
