flywheel spins, engine does not.

Hi. I have a 91 1 ton with an auto transmission. The starter turns the flywheel but not the engine. D o I need to remove the tranny to see what is going on? Any ideas?

Uh, if you are sure the flywheel is turning, then you have a broken crank. Are you sure the starter gear is engaging the flywheel? If not then you would get a real fast "wheeeeeeeee" noise from the starter but the engine would not turn.

was it running ok then just wouldnt restart or did it stall and wouldn't re-start?

I had it in the shop a year ago and they had the tranny out for a rebuild. I was driving down the highway and the rpm's started jumping around. I pulled off and it wouldn't engage in any gear. I shut it down to check tranny fluid leaks and level which were good. When I went to start it again the starter would just spin the flywheel but wouldn't crank the engine.

i would be seeing them real soon.

do you have your paperwork? did they replace a rear main seal? maybe the bolts were not torqued and sheared the bolts off.

I no longer have the paper work, and I do not know if they replaced the rear main seal or not. Wouldn't the crank spin if the flywheel was spinning?

not if the bolts that hold the flywheel to the crankshaft are broken

I have heard of the flex plate hub breaking loose from the flywheel.

So the problem may be you new a new flex plate (flywheel), and the hub is still bolted to the crank like it should be.

i'm sure that's it.

does it have a 2 piece flywheel with flex plate like on the 6.9? not sure i have only had a 6.9 with automatic apart.

if so the converter should be still connected to the crank?

none the less, transmission out and a junk yard item to fix.

there is a small plate that is supposed to be mounted on the outside of the flex-plate to prevent the flex-plate hub from cracking. if this was not put back on when the flex-plate was removed, the hub will break off the plate, causing the symptoms you are describing.

Wow, I never heard of that. Better than a broken crank, tho.
