Yeah, the good thing about 2.73's is that you'd be getting the best mileage possible at 80mph, but it takes a lot of gas to get something moving all the time in the city with 2.73's. I'd rather be geared too low than too high.

[QUOTE=AbandonedBronco;7213907]Yeah, but from what I hear, horsepower is what you need to keep you going at higher speeds.

No, Torque is what maintains the speed as it takes only 1 hp to maintain each mph with vehicles of this size. The 4.9 is just like a diesel from the standpoint that at 1600 rpm it is operating in its "peak performance rpm/powerband range"- it will perform fine. A typical diesel truck (18 wheeler) would be running a few hundred rpm slower, pulling 42k pounds at 55 mph.

Until last year, my dad had a 1984 F150, 300 cid, 4 speed overdrive, 4x2, XLT lariet with the stepside. 3:55 gears, he got 23 mpg hwy (25 mpg towing his flathead powered 1932 3-window coupe) and 18 mpg city. Of course dad had a few mods to the truck (being fonzie) which helped. The truck lasted for 640,000 miles, and included 3 engines (rebuilt), 1 syncro set in the trans.
