I've been dealing with problems with the radio in my 98 EB for a couple of years. Now it seems to be happening more often. Sometimes the buttons don't work except for the on-off/volume. Sometimes the display doesn't light up. It stays that way for a few second to several minutes. Its the am/fm stereo cassete with 6 CD changer in the console. I'm not sure if its the "Mach" stereo or not. I am not very good with chasing electrical bugs, but any suggestions would be appreciated.
Radio could be getting wet from a leaking windshield, I had a problem with the radio in my now sold 97 Expy was killing the battery but started out with problems like your describing, called a few salvage yards and picked one up for $75 installed and worked good as new.
I have had the same problem with my radio since my Exp was just out of warranty. In my case the problem shows up if the heat is blasting or the Exp has been sitting in the hot sun all day. Its almost as if a component in the radio overheats. If I shut the radio off for about a half hour or the dash area cools off it will work fine again and I may not see the problem for weeks. I have the standard sound package that came with mine. Just another of many typical annoyances that plague Ford products.
Check ebay, there were a bunch there the other week. Don't forget to get the stock number off of the unit for a easier way to find one that works with the wiring harness.
