Looking for some help with a 4wd system on a 2001 Ford F-150 5.4l super crew. The 4wd doesnt work. I run the truck on a hoist with the 4wd switch in the 4HI postion. I can hear it click in, the front drive shft spins, the vaccum lines look ok. I am uncertain if its the solinoids behind the battery or the vaccum can behind the oil drool plate at the diff. I did a search and found a few things so I am looking to the experts for some help here. I am thinking its the solonids but want to be sure.
There are two vacuum lines going to the shift motor. One line has vacuum all the time depending on which mode you are in. You can use a hand vacuum pump to check the shift motor on the lift. If it works to engage 4WD and back to 2WD then you have a solenoid problem. But if the shift motor won't shift the axle in and out then the motor is bad or the lever that the motor moves is gummed up and stuck. Good luck!
I think the shift motor on the transfer case is ok. Like I said the drive shaft spins, the front one, but there is no transfer of power to the front wheels. I will check the vaccum lines when I remove the drool cup.
