my 04 does the same thing. sometimes i've had to use the 4x4 on hard packed snow (slick enough to cause sliding, but hard/grippy enough to cause it to lurch and hop around). also does it in gooey stuff turning tight enough. the dodge does the same thing, although at this point it rattles and bangs in 4x4 no matter what.
Expanding on what I wrote in post #9, this will happen even with the wheels off of the ground. And if you are accelerating and deccelerating the wheels in the course of every revolution, then any slack in the splines, u-joints, etc. is going to give you some mechanical noise.
Not saying that you don't have loose/bad parts, just saying that I would expect some mechanical clunking even if all of the parts are good, if you are driving the wheels with angle on the u-joints.
I'm back with some new info...this condition is not normal and in fact turned out to be a combonation of a couple things...
1) Transfercase was nearly burnt up and has been rebuilt = $1500.00
2) On the back of the front driveshaft there is a joint where it looks like there would be a u-joint, there isn't one, it is more like a ball joint and socket...something that would like like a hip bone socket and the ball that goes into it, it was split and dry as a bone, rusted and so stiff you could not even begin to move it with your hands where it should freely move around. = $350.00
Differential was checked and proved to be fine, also had all u-joints in front end checked and are fine.
I was told that drive shaft being out of balance could also be the culprit of the problem but not sure since we did not have to go that route....
