ok somebody help me out? I have great luck in the past on here with advice. My four wheel drive experience has been limited to my well used old Ranger. Different front end ofcourse. Joe
Been awhile since I did this and not sure of your year hubs.
From foggy memory, the hubs on my 94 F250 were very easy to service. You pull the cover off, something like 8 screws. And I think there is one lock nut which requires a special socket with little ears on it. The shop should have one for your model and year. The hub assembly pulls out easily. Memory IS foggy so you might not even need the special socket to pull the 4WD hub.
All you have to do is put a very light coat of high temp grease on it. Wheel bearing grease works or you could look up the spec. Clean up the spring and any other parts and regrease and reassemble.
A simple job. If you want to pull the entire wheel assembly and regrease the bearings that is a harder job and takes a GOOD Impact wrench and there is a big C clip you have to remove that you can't see due to the grease. But like I say, if you are doing the 4wd hub, a piece of cake.
A decent manual helps with blow up pictures telling the storey.
i usually grease mine about every 50k miles. youll need a special socket to remove the 4 wheel drive parts. its in the specialty tools ailse at advance. i think its about $10 dollars. remove the screws that hold the hub cover in place. theres a couple of circle type clips you have to take out. then use the socket to remove the rest of it. grease it up and then put it back in the same way you took it out. i cant remember the specs right off, but you torque it to something like 70 lbs and then back it off about 10 clicks. ill have to check my manual to get the exact numbers though. one of the parts you put back in has a **** on it that has to be lined up with an indention in the part behind it. other than that, its pretty straight forward.
I appreciate the help i have gotten here over the years. I have been bailed out many times. But what im wondering about is the needle bearings? The manuel i bought, and everyone else allways shows the auto hub. Id think the manuel hub should be simple? Id appreciate any more help if anyone has dealt exactly with the manuel hub on and f250 of my of vintage. Thanks Joe
