JUST PULLED THE GAS TANK OFF MY TRUCK AND FOUND A COUPLE PIN HOLES. CAN I USE JB WELD ON THIS AND THAN CAN I PUT THAT UNDERCAOT SPRAY ON. GOT A BAD BED RIGHT NOW AND CAN'T FIX IT LET. WILL THIS WORK
1st - I learned this quite some time ago, but all Caps is considered yelling, so before anyone else jumps in, I'll warn you.
2nd - I personally wouldn't trust JB Weld on a fuel tank. Update - I just got off the phone with my hubby & he said not to try it. He's been in the petro business for about 15 years and although he's never tried it, doesn't believe JB Weld will hold over time. He does recall seeing a fuel tank sealer that seals from the inside of the tank in one of our racing magazines, but since he's not home, can't tell me which one. You may be able to find this fuel tank product at your local race shop if not, he'll be home this weekend and if you still need the info, I'll get him to look for it.
3rd - I can tell you one thing for sure - if you're wanting to use the undercoating as an additional sealer for the fuel, it won't work. The fuel will eat right through it. That's the main reasons gas stations have concrete slabs around the pump. It tears asphault and rubber up. Eats right through it.
Ha thanks Carlene,
first sorry for the caps, just forgot I had it on and if you could please find out form your hubby that would be great and the help would be greatful. just E me when you find out please!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Jan-03 AT 10:22 PM (EST)]I recently bought and used a small repair kit for my tank. I got it at Advance Axxx and it's made for small leaks and to be used on the outside. You don't need to drain your tank it comes with some mastic you rub on the hole before you apply the fiber-glass patch, and then smear epoxy across it. It isn't pretty, but it set up really hard by morning and that was in freezing temperatures. The brand name is SYON "fuel tank repair kit". There are several by SYON, I think this is the only one for steel auto gas tanks. Comes in a 3" by 5" box. Part # 90180 or SR-180. One I got is white box with blue stripes, black letters. No leaks as of now. Waiting on a "in-tank" sealer that I ordered right before Christmas, to be used as a precaution/addition. Good luck!, Blair
Hey Tim - Steve got home not too long ago and when I mentioned the POR thing to him, he said that's where he saw it and that it only makes sense that nothing is gonna stick unless you first clean the area you're trying to fix. Go ahead and spend the $50 some bucks and get a good product. Do it right the first time.
