ABS wheel sensor

OK, I need some advice. I'm currently deployed to Afghanistan, and naturally everything goes WRONG as soon as I'm gone!

My wife has a 4x4 2005 Excursion and recently, her ABS light came on. I did some searching here and suspected it was one of the wheel sensors based on my research. Well, she took it to the mechanic who said it was the right wheel ABS bearing sensor (which also serves as a speed sensor).

At first he said that the tires we had were too big and that it rubbed the wire bare. I talked to him on the phone (gotta love Skype!) and he told me that it would be $776. He then told me it would be a "good idea" to go ahead and replace BOTH sides (even though he showed both sides to my wife, and only the one side is worn!!)

I told him that since he suspects it's because my tires are too big (they're not, BTW) that I wasn't going to spend $1500 in repairs only to have the same tires wear it down again in a few months.

We just bought our tires about 5 or 6 months ago, and I'm wondering if the tire shop didn't fully plug in the sensor and it came loose. Does that sound like a possibility? Naturally, I can't prove that, but I told my wife to go by the tire store where we bought our tires and talk to the manager to see if it's something they could/would fix.

I guess I'm really just venting here, but I do have one question: will this bad ABS sensor be OK until I get home in July? Or should I just suck it up and pay the $700? I can probably fix myself (will save $$ on labor) but if it needs to be done, then it needs to be done.

Advice please?? Thanks to all!

I have the same front axle and 35" Toyo mud tires. The ABS wire is clipped to the ESOF hose and the hydraulic brake hose. The bundle should not contact the tire, for the most part they go up and inward from the hub, the tire should have a couple of inches of clearance from the top center.

I've read post here where the wire has been damaged, but I am not sure how. Being that the vehicle is atleast 5 years old, it should have at least 65,000 miles, it wouldn't be a bad idea to replace both bearings. They should last to 150k miles or more, but you should be at least half way there and knowing they were done together means you will not need to have either repaired again for many more years.

I would find a different shop, the two hubs/bearings should be around $700. My neighbor and I did them in under three hours.

There are replacement sensors available. You don't have to replace the bearing just for the sensor.

Same part # for the right side also. They are a little cheaper from rock auto.

I have a sensor for the right front 7.3 4wd. Used of course it works. Given your location it's yours if you want it. 317 TAW 345 TAS 1972. There is NO way it should cost $700 to change the two sensors. Suggestion... IF it is only abs and the brake hoses are in the clear you can drive w/o abs as we did years ago before it was invented.
