'02 F150 tailgate locking automatically

One of the most annoying things about my '02 F150 KR is the tailgate that somehow locks itself, so that I need to use the key to un-lock it before I can open it.

I've had several '97-'03 F150's in the past, and never ONCE intentionally locked the tailgate, and never ONCE did the tailgate lock itself (like the doors do).

Is there a feature, like the doors, that's doing this, or is it just something in the lock mechanism that's vibrating or jiggling the lock to the "locked" position? REALLY p_sses me off to have to walk back inside and get my keys to put the tailgate down.

Mine does the same thing occasionally. I haven't looked into it yet since it doesn't tick me off like it seems to do you. Is yours a Screw or a Scab? What color? Good luck!

Nice looking truck!

Mine's a Scab. Kinda wish I'd looked for a Screw, but I got such a smokin' deal on mine I couldn't pass it up.

Mine is a metallic-ish green with lower tan. Really beautiful.

HOWEVER, I smashed my driver's side rearview mirror housing (the glass and turn signal are still intact), and I don't know where to get an aftermarket color-matched replacement. I won't spend many hundreds of $$ at the dealer, so I guess I'll get a black aftermarket one. Since the mirror has black accents all around, I don't think it'll look too bad.

Thanks!
That is called Estate Green, the one color that I did not want of the three colors that these were available in. What is really wanted was the Chestnut color.

The mirror is a problem that I wish that I had right now. Last weekend I was in a parking garage and got too close to a support pole that had a fire extinguisher box on it that I didn't see. I now have a gash in the side of the bed that has pierced the panel through about an inch long.

Take a trip to the local scrap yard. The green mirror cover that you smashed pops off of the mirror. Find one in the yard that is good and get someone to paint it for you. Good luck!

Ooooo, the parking garage support post-that's exactly what took out my mirror! I parked in that spot thinking NO ONE could park next to me and put a ding in my door. I backed straight up and turned the wheel and SMASH! Luckily, it damaged the mirror and I stopped right as the pillar scraped the color-matched front fender trim. So now my mirror has cracked plastic, and there are scrapes in the fender trim.

Still, the mirror can be fixed by me, and the fender trim doesn't look bad from 10 ft away.

I am SO sorry you gashed your bed. What are you going to do with it?

I have the same problem but on top of it I can't unlock it with a key. Each time it happened I had to take the access plate off and manually slide the lock back up. Since I now have a tonneau that I keep locked most of the time I couldn't have the tailgate locking me out of the bed so I put some RTV on the locking mechanism to keep it in the unlocked position.

i had to replace my mirror not too long ago. Mine is an 03 supercrew lariat, but should be the same mirror (turn signal, no heat offered on our trucks). I can not remember what e-tailer I bought it from but it is made by kool vue (search ebay). I only had to replace the glass (wife clipped a mailbox but the glass shattered when it smacked the window). I believe it was about $30 shipped and yes the molding pops off of the back so you can use your factory color. this was after I went to four junkyards and the dealership. I actually probably still have the whole assembly in the garage because all I need was the glass (actually just the clips, got suckered in to the replacement glass from Ford and realized it did not come with the clips, told me it was another $75)

Well, for now it will have to wait until my wife's car (see signature) gets out of the body shop getting damage from the 8" diameter oak tree limb that fell on it and the truck during a recent ice storm. Then the truck goes in to get damage fixed and I will see about it then.
