I have a 90' F150 w/ a 302 v8 and a manual 5spd. M5r2 tranny. It's a 4 wheel drive and i plan on mud boggin' the crap out of it. The engine is all original and is starting to wear out w/ about 150k miles. I plan on rebuilding it, but I'm wondering how i can get big torque out of it on pump gas. I still want decent milage, but this truck is going to have 4.10 gears on a pair of 33x13.5x15" tires and a 4" lift. How can i build up the motor to get better than 400ft./lbs. and still get about 15 higway mpg.
!HELP!
Dont mean to be a downer, but with those tires, gears, what you want to do with it, and the Hp/ft lbs you want, you're never gonna get that mpg from a 302. You would be better served by building and swapping a good 351w into it and forgetting about getting 15 mpg from a mud bogging truck..........Just my .02 worth.
400 lb/ft from a 302. Hhhm. How is power made? Air/fuel in, power out. More air/fuel, more power. Easiest way is to make the holes you fill bigger, which means a large engine. Next comes increasing the volumetric efficiency of the engine. Intakes, head work, headers, carbs, cams. And, of course, RPM. More air/fuel events, more power.
Google "331 stroker" or "347 stroker". There are ways to make this power with a 302 as a base. You'll have little left of the original engine--probably the block only. You will not be getting 15 mpg though....
I found some links, but having computer issues, so I can't post them now.
There is only 1 way to get over 400ft/lbs out of a 302, supercharge it. If that's not something you want to do the only other option is to add 50 cubic inches.. but then it's no longer a 302.
A motor that produces big TQ at low rpms will get good milage, my 5.8 got 17+mpg on the hwy in OD at 70mph, of course it got 13mpg around town when I was using all the HP.
for a mudbog truck i like high horsepower at high rpms let the gears supply your torque, throw a set of 5.14s in it and rev it to 7500rpms and you'll be happy you can do this with h-beam rods some new main caps big fat solid roller cam (yes you can run a solid roller on the street nowadays just check your ***** a little more often) good set of ported aluminum heads lightweight forged pistons big headers and i wouldn't run the fuel injection system with that many rpms so throw on a victor manifold and a 800cfm carb and you should be good
where could you find a good 351 and could i put in a fuel injected or should i put in a carberated? Wouldn't i have to change motor mounts?
I got an older 351 by buying a whole truck cheap, pulling the motor for rebuild, and selling the truck minus the motor. I paid 700 for the truck and sold it for 400 minus the motor, believe it or not. So the base motor only cost me 100. I did put several hundred into the motor build/rebuild, and am very happy with the results.
The motor mounts will fit the same location on the frame. You'll want to replace them anyway while the motor is out, just so you have years before you have to replace them again. They are not that expensive.
I personally would go with FI over carb, just because you still have the computer to adjust air and fuel flow automatically. just my .02
Would I need to switch my M5r2 trans for a ZF if i swich to a 351W? What should i do about a transfercase.Recondition the B&W or switch out for a NP205?
