That's a little soon for the fan to start kicking on. I have hit that temp and never heard the fan(or I might have just blasted my eardrums out with too much def leppard growing up, I dunno). You also say that it starts at a lower temp than that. I dunno, but that seems almighty soon to me for the fan to start kickin on.

1 and 2 Fan... The 3rd noise your asking about (the extremely high pitch whistle) is also the fan. If I remember correctly it's the rivets. At certain rpms (high) they oscillate just right to create the whistle. Only some do it under extreme load, mostly towing when the fan is on. When mine did it the first time I thought I was having a melt down.

Around 209 or so it will kick on when accelerating but then back off. 215 it kicks in pretty good. I have hit 220 once towing and it kicked on like mad for a minute until the temps dropped to about 210 then it relaxed.

Here in Vegas it gets up to 120 air temps and the truck kicks on more then. I think maybe it is using more parameters than just engine coolant to start up the fan?

Engine temperature is not the only parameter that the PCM monitors to determine cooling fan operation. This is the reason that you will see some variation in engine temperature as it correlates to fan operation. The operation/description of the FSS (Fan Speed Sensor) from the PC/ED manual has a fairly good explanation as to how the system "thinks". This is not your traditional engine hits temp X and the fan clutch locks up. The fan speed sensor is a Hall-Effect sensor integral to the vistronic drive fan (VDF). The powertrain control module (PCM) will monitor the sensor input and control the VDF speed based upon engine coolant temperature (ECT), transmission fluid temperature (TFT) and intake air temperature (IAT) requirements. When an increase in fan speed for vehicle cooling is requested, the PCM will monitor the FSS signal and output the required pulse width modulated (PWM) signal to a fluid port valve within the VDF.

hangon2me/aldrichg9/Wyatt66f100,

I am a diesel newbie, and your thread(s) hit me good. I just picked up an 03 F350 6.0L w/50k miles (12" donahoe lift w/38's) & a 4" custom exhaust (California Truck). It had an EDGE tuner in the backseat, uninstalled, but has been installed for most of the life of the truck.

When driving on the freeway @ 1500-2000rpms (60-70mph), the truck kind-of shudders or just loses acceleration, and I get a wierd pig "snorting" sound, just like Wyatt66f100 described as the turbo. The engine light is on with the infamous P132B code, which I can't clear. So I installed the Edge to see if anything would change, and it didn't. I can say that it was nice to see realtime Boost & EGT's on the tuner.

But now I get every code in the book, and performance does not change and the "snorting is still there. I hear (a lot) that the SCT X3 is a very good tuner for the 6.0L, but since it doesn't have a readout, I guess I have to buy some gauges.

And on another note, I have been reading alot about removing the EGR circuit, which is notorious for killing the 6.0L, but I have CA smog checks coming in 2010, so I have to be careful. hangon2me/aldrichg9, can I get rid of the "scoop" (I forgot what piece this is in) to help increase exhaust efficiency, and still have EGR operational? Or would it be better to go for the complete EGR Elimination?

Lots of questions going on in my head right now.

Before you install ANY tuner, get it running right! I hope you ran an OASIS before you bought the truck! The Edge sitting on the back seat may mean bad things inside that engine....First thing I'd do is have the codes read by a good Ford diesel tech..... may or may not be a Ford dealer....If the OASIS has NOT been run, request one at the top of this Forum.

I didn't run an OASIS yet. What is it and how do I do it? I have my VIN # and all. The tuner is not important. I want to get it running good before anything is done. Thanks for your reply.

Added: did a search here and found it. I requested it. What information does it give and how is it useful?

I saw someone here (in the forums) mention a good diesel tech in southern california, preferably orange county. Does anyone have a reference? I will gladly pay for a good knowledgable diesel technician.
