Thanks for the input, good to know that the 20s still have the 4th leaf in the max trailer tow package. Still havent seen the 18s in person (all 4 lariats at the local dealer have chrome 20s). I still think I would rather have the thicker rubber but its at least reasuring to know that the 20s dont have a great affect on the trucks capability.
Like I posted earlier, my tires are P rated (on 18 inch wheels), but they still have a 2600lb capacity per tire. It seems to me that should be plenty of load capacity for a half ton. However, there are LT tires available in that size as well.
The sales manager and I had some lengthy discussions about whether the max tow package was in conflict with the 20" wheels. The verdict was no conflict. My truck is coming with both.
The problem with the max trailer tow pack and 20's is payload. I have the 20's with the rear extra rear leaf so my payload should be 1500lbs. But for some reason or another the truck is only rated for 900lbs payload. Now this is a problem when the payload of the truck cant handle the trailer tounge weights it's designed for. If i got the max trailer tow pack i would have a 11100lbs tow rateing but only a 900lb payload capacity. The dealers aint got a clue whats going on. I am currently getting someone higher up in ford to look into this for us so we can figure out what the deal is.
Must be due to P rated 20's. I looked at a max tow Screw with p rated 18's and payload was @ 1,080lbs. I know it was under 1,100. Anyone with max tow, 18s and lts? (from factory)
20" P rated Pirellis: 2403 lbs max load rating
18" P rated BF Goodrich Rugged Trail T/A: 2601 lbs max load rating
18" P rated Goodyear Wrangler SR-A: 2601 lbs max load rating
18" LT (C) rated Goodyr Wrangler AT/S: 2535 lbs max load rating
17" LT (c) Goodyear Wrangler AT/SFX4) 2,600 lbs max load rating
Just for comparson I add my current tire:
18" LT (E) Toyo Open Country A/T: 3,415 lbs max load rating
Not a big diff amoung stockers there. The big shocker though... The factory 18" LTs have a LOWER max load than the other P rated 18"s???
If I add them all up I don't get it. Rear axle max is what... 4,000lbs yet thats still less than max tire load rating, even for the lowest ranked Pirellis. So what gives? Hopefully a tall forehead can explain to me.
Powerkid, where did you get your numbers from? Bsimmer got his 900lb rating off his truck, which does not match the 2403lb rating for the pirelli 20s?????
What gives? am I missing something, why do these number not match up?
Thats the whole point. 900lbs is payload of truck. What that realationship is as compared to tires... We're waiting for Ford to explain.
I went to tirerack.com punched in 09 F150 and it gave all factory tires with specs. With exception of the 17" Goodyears which they do not carry. Went to Goodyear site for that.
I'm shocked GM hasn't run a comercial yet with Howie Long pointing out the Fords potential (if its right) weakness.
I dont recon they even know about this problem. I didnt until i looked at the door sticker. All my data shows 1500lb payload but my door sticker says otherwise. After all this there could be a problem with the info on my sticker. I cant see why they would make a truck that cant even carry 5 people without being illegal.

Well if the rear axle is 4K lbs, the truck has about 1/2 of it's 6200 lbs over the rear axle. 4000(max axle?)-3100 (1/2 curb weight)= 900 lbs
