Hi, i am soon to start an interesting adventure of painting my restored cj7 with a 351w engine. I have a friend coming to help me but does anyone have any tips that would be useful. I had a really good website on painting but somehow it got deleted. I have a book on painting but it doesnt say much. Does anyone know any good sites. I am using dupont paint and filler primer with a hvlp gun. What is a good temperature to paint at, i can paint everything except my tub in my shop but the tub will be painted in my barn and i will be
enclosing an area with tarps and use a kerosene heater. Thanks.
James, The magic number for painting, in all that I have read is 60 degrees minimum temp. at the paint surface and to be maintained for at least 8 hours after your finished painting. Another good source for information is http://www.autobodystore.com/cgi-bin/config.pl?index The folks you buy your paint from, should sell you the proper reducers and hardners etc... for the temp. range you anticipate painting in.
Hope this helps.
ok thanks tom, i am going to soon put on my primer im doing the final painting this weekend. I will check out the site. My primer says thin primer 75%-125% which i will do 100 just mix the two equal cans of primer and thinner. it says 18-20 seconds in a dupont cup on the thinner directions (very unclear). WHat does the 18-20 mean? is this the time you stir it or what? thanks
Hi,
I think that what they are referring to is a measuring/timing cup I also believe its called a "Zahns cup". Where you thin the paint, primer or whatever to a certain consistency, fill the measured cup and you time the rate that the thinned paint empties through a small hole in the bottom of the cup.
Please note that I am not an auto body person, and I agree that if you ask the people supplying your paint, they could give you the proper information
You are correct, the dupont cut is used to determine viscosity of liquids by timing how long it takes to empty. There are various makes of cups and hole sizes. I understand most will come with conversion charts for different times. I usually mix my primers by the ratio and strain. Paint would probably be more critical.
