Hello. I have an 86 Bronco with a 302 EFI, automatic trans. I have had the truck for about a month now, and I am piecing together things that were missing. I am trying to replace the breather filter and crankcase breather hose, but I cannot seem to find the right one. Everything that I have looked up indicates that the air cleaner should be mounted over on the driver side fenderwell, but mine is mounted on the driver side of the engine (physically on the engine). The engine has been replaced years ago, but does anyone know what this setup is from? It doesnt seem to be mustang or crown vic. I would appreciate any help I can get on this. I am starting to think that I bought a Frankenstein Bronco.
I suppose I can do that, but it is driving me nuts trying to figure out what setup/engine they used in this Bronco. I'd rather replace one little thing if I could.
I have posted the pictures in my gallery. Is this a stock setup for an early '86 Bronco? Note: it has a breather/oil cap instead of a fill tube with a missing elbow (already purchased) that connects the breather filter through the crankcase breather hose. I'd appreciate any insight you may have. Thanks!
Ok, this looks like the correct top half of the air box but in the wrong location and the lower portion of it typically has the inbound air hose coming out one end rather than the side. The twin intake hoses on every EFI engine bay I've ever encountered run straight across the engine bay to the air box mounted on the driver's side. This would take that nasty bend out of the intake hoses and move the corrugated hose that runs from the SIDE of the bottom of the box to the END and then straight up to the upper core support. The breather filter is plumbed via a long formed plastic tube/hose that runs from the valve cover to the back side of the air box. In your case the location would be on the passenger side of the bottom of the air box as it sits in the truck right now. The filter mounts with a slide clip through a hole in the bottom of the box with the filter pad facing up. The primary air filter installs on top of this and the top half of the box with the intake hoses to the throttle body clips right on top. I'll take a picture or two of mine and post them.
If you decide you want to move the air box and plumb the breather filter the way it appears on most EFI trucks that I have seen, I know that both the F-series/Bronco and E-series vans used the same air box through the late 90's.
I will probably have to just find a replacement lower section of the air box. Whoever did this even mounted the coolant/washer fluid reservoir in a different place then. So so you think that this setup was just a homemade idea? Seems kind of odd. I appreciate the help!
No that's not homemade I have seen other trucks like that, I believe Ford changed it after the first year. You should be able to swap in a later style airbox but you'll have to make room for it first.
conanski is correct. the first year for the efi 5.0 in the bronco (85) had the air box ontop of the motor just like that. they changed this over to what we all know today as the norm due to the motor warming up the air before it reaches the motor causing all sorts of issues. go to the wrecking yard and get the intake tubes/box etc from an 87 or newer F150/Bronco along with mounting brackets and you will be set.
Thanks to all for the great information! I'll be heading to the boneyard to find this setup. The Ford dealership couldn't even come up with a diagram of this setup. Thanks again!
Yes thats stock, for 86(my 302 150 is the same) I just picked up everything off a 1991 f-150 to do this swap, and you will need the air intake hose, air box,air box bracket, cross over bracket and mount(hooks to the Rad support w/3 bolts) washer/coolent bottle and breather tube which will need to be modified to fit the 86 valve cover or swap a newer valve cover. On my 86 pickup all the holes but 2 seem to be in the right location for mounting and they are easy to drill/get too.I will be installing this the next nice day,and I will be taking photos.
