That would depend entirely on what you want to do with it, what your buget is and what you can do yourself. Im gonna guess that you arnt going to race your f250 but want a bit more power for towing, hauling, and a bit just for fun. an 84 is still carbed no? You can go anywhere from an exhaust system with headers (no 1 upgrade) to a full out bore stroke steel crank monster cammed critter that makes 500+ hp.
I have moderate budget and can do almost any mod myself except for stuff that requires machineing. mostly i want torque for off road but still want a fair amount of horsepower for street driving(truck must still be street legal). i had some ideas of stuff i wanted to do but i wanted some other peoples opinions before i did anything. i have a fair knowlege of engines but im not a expert! and yes its carbed
i would pull the heads off and sell them use that to buy a set of trick flow heads and a new intake manifold i have the edelbrock rpm air gap and love it but i also have a 3500 stall converter, look for a cam that you think you like and then go one step bigger than what you think you'll need (you'll always wonder what it would be like if you went with the bigger cam) and get a stall converter (as loose as you can get while still having rpms be above the stall speed at 60mph) headers and exhaust
or you could do it the other way around like i did with my t-bird, pull the bottom end and put in a stroker kit with a forged crank h-beam rods and forged pistons and leave the top end stock till you have the money to play with it, that way you never worry about blowing up the bottom end
Thanks tbird! I was thinking of getting a edlebrock top end kit that has every thing in it. do you think thats the way to go or buy individual parts seperately?
i wouldn't get the edelbrock top end kits and the trickflow heads are nicer for your money than the edelbrock heads, they make awesome intake manifolds and that is all i use them for, i HATE HATE HATE edelbrock carbs i can never get them tuned right it's always one thing after another with those carbs get a holley 750 vac. secondary or so, the 428CJ carbs are good carbs if you want a stock looking carb they are 735cfm i beleive
and with stroker kits there's no replacement for displacement go as big as you can afford
I was thinking holly truck avenger carb' edlebrock intake manifold, GT-40 heads, and getting it bored .030 over with stroker would be sufficiant for me. what do you think?
OK, so your talking about doing a complete overhaul or do you want to be able to do this in a weekend? if your looking at a complete overhaul, a stroker kit is hard to beat. For about 1000 bucks you can put a nice stroker kit in that will up the torque considerably, just be careful of your going to tow with it, i would stay with 9.0-9.5 compression so that your not detonating. THe bottom end will dictate the rout you go with your top end. I wouldnt bother with gt40 heads, they are nothing more that a "high swirl" head. If you have some cash to spend go with AFR heads. Very well built, and the ports are the best flowing your going to find for the size. Which makes for good torque. If your looking to spend a little less there is nothing wrong with edelbrock heads. Since the motor is going in a heavy truck I would stick to an edelbrock preformer intake, if will help keep your vaccume signal high, wich gives great throttle response and better lower rpm power. I really wouldnt waste alot of money on your carb either. I would put a basic holley on it, vaccume secondary, 650cfm.
i would stick to around lower than 11:1 you can run about 12:1 with aluminum heads but 11:1 with iron heads is pushing it i would stick more to 10.5 that way if you mess up a little with calculations your not screwed into getting thicker head gaskets
this is of course just my experiance with motors i have built, but i don't ever build any performance towing motors lol they are usually stock rebuilds if you are towing with it i do drag cars and offroad trucks that don't tow too much
your cam has a little to do with running pump gas as well, the more duration you have the more you can get away with, also make sure your heads are smooth in the chambers, i would use some sand paper and sand them really well till they look polished use like 1000 grit at the end, butttt that takes time so if you just want to toss them on i don't blame you
and yeah stroker kits are very nice but you need to make sure you upgrade the top end to flow the extra air
I would NOT reccomend the Truck Avenger carb. a buddy had one a couple years ago, and it would NEVER stay calibrated right. I had to readjust it after every time he went out muddin. Any major bumps or jarring, and the thing would throw itself off calibration. I would say get the edelbrock performer AVS off road. Put that thing on, and never had a problem again.
Thanks for all the help guys. if you have any more advice just keep posting. and by the way bluerebel did you have any clearance problems putting 38'' tires on with just a 4 inch lift???
