Good on ya for keeping at it and getting it off. I have run maintenance shops for trucking companies for 14 years or so and you would not believe some of the issues we have had getting overtightened filters off.
thanks guys. i felt like a complete *** asking about that but i have never ever run into a problem like that on such a simple maintence issue before. i am just glad it's over with.
I recall one on either a 6V92 Detroit or a Series 60 Detroit that we had three mechanics with three commercial (MAC and SNAP-ON) heavy duty filter wrenches and three 4' cheater bars to get off and it was all they could do. We could not figure out how to get two more guys on it. Figured it was installed with a 1" drive impact, somewhere around 1300 ft-lbs.
so is this me taking it off? or the jerk who put it on in the first place? thought this was too funny to pass up. flipped on the box when i got home and this what the first thing i saw! god must have a sense of humor indeed.
thank god! took two people, vise grip filter pliers and a 2' pry bar through the filter. and a fram no less!
Now don't go flamin' the FRAM!!!! LOL It wasn't the filter's fault. That was operator error. Not you, but previous owner. But I'm so glad you got it off. And I will say this, I've never used anything but FRAM oil filters. And I've never had a motor fail because of it. I think if you stay on top of your maintenance it doesn't matter what filter you use. I even had an OA just to see on this motor I'm running now. They said the oil could go 10k easy. Anyway, that's just may .02.
the only rason i hate on fram occasionally is i saw a truck show where they cut open a fram filter and i believe a valvoline filter. not sure about the other brand, to pull out the paper filter element. it was about 1/3 the length of the valvoline one. so for the same price you get 1/3 the protection.

every test ive ever seen on oil filters has had fram rated as one of the two or three worst filters on the market. i wouldnt put one on my truck if you gave it to me for free.

also, just having a paper filter is enough reason to hate on them for me.....go to that link dellwas posted and compare the $5 fram to the $5 purolator pure one. its not even close. the purolator has twice the element surface area. pure one has a stamped steel cartidge end cap and the fram has a cardboard. the pure one has a steel bypass valve and the fram is plastic. pure one has 64 pleats, fram 50. pure ones element is 100" long, fram is 61". pure one has a synthetic element, fram is paper. those tests are from a 5.0 oil filter too, which is about a 1/3 the length of ours.
People used to filter oil through toilet paper rolls and get tons of miles back in the old days. If you maintain your vehicle, you should never have to worry about it. It's all about what works for the individual. Fram works fine for me.

fram may work fine for you, but they dont for a lot of people. liquids and cardboard/paper just dont mix. and the cardboard end caps in them are known for coming apart and clogging up various engine parts. i used to use fram until i cut a few filters open and saw mine coming apart too. we all have our personal preferences when it comes to parts, so im not knocking you or anything.
yeah, people did used to filter oil through all sorts of stuff back in the old days. paint strainers, wash cloths, t-shirts, etc. but the difference was they filtered the oil and then put it back in the engine. so there was nothing that could break loose and get trapped in the engine. i just dont like the idea of oil soaked cardboard being anywhere near my engine lol.
