so i went to start my truck this morning and it popped once so i shut it off and cycled the glow plugs again and now the starter will only turn the engine over for a few seconds then it just spins. sometimes it wont even turn the truck over at all. im assuming justa bad starter. is there anyway it could be batteries?? is the starter hard to take out?? thanks
What engine and truck is this in?
What kind of pop was it? from the engine or starter? "when" the starter does turn the engine over, if it turns over as fast as usual you can rule out the batteries.
On the times you said it wont turn the truck over at all does it sound like its just grinding? or not engaging all the way?
If the starters spins but the engine (flywheel/flexplate) doesn't, then the starter gear isn't engaging. I've heard of broken springs causing issues, but it's probably easier to unbolt the start and just replace it.

Broken springs can cause this, but there are also clutches in the bendix gear assembly. If you take the starter off and try to rotate the gear, there should be a slight drag on the gear b/c of these clutches, if you have one that you can spin the gear very easily, as you mentioned you will have problems with it spinning but not engaging. That is why I asked him if it made a grinding noise any.
From what i've heard its more common for the clutch to go out than it is for a spring to break, although each engine is different
Sounds like the starter clutch is slipping. The clutch binds in one direction and spins freely in the other. If the clutch is worn then you will be able to turn the pinion gear in both directions. You might have to use gloves and put some muscle into it to test for slip.
IIRC its called the overrunning clutch, its there to keep your engine from overspinning the starter when the motor catches, I forgot about it only being tight in one direction But if he checks his, he shouldnt need gloves, you'll know right off the bat if its bad or not
