Being an auto idiot I have a question.
MY PS's E4OD has the temp sender in the driver's side of the trans right above the oil pan flange on the trans. in a factory "hole."
Is this a good spot?

no it isnt , that is the line pressure test port i have seen many installed there and it does not give a adequate indication of trans tempthe best way is in the outlet line from the trans to see what the actual trans fluid temp is before cooling

so if I install my temp. gauge in the cooler line do you suggest the outlet or the inlet of the trans. mine is a c6 trans. behind a 460 4x4 f250 and I am pulling HEAVY loads 20,000 gross combined wt. It is only occasionally but I want to monitor the trans. going over the mtns. plan on installing gauge in transfer case and rear axle also. Your suggestion would be greatly appreciated. thankyou in advance. Doug

This shows it before the rad so its a little far forward, but its the best photo I could find on the web to show the idea:

This is on a ford explorer. Looks simple enough to do, even easier then putting a fitting in the pan.

Is it OK to have it that far from the transmission outlet? I guess the temp won't drop much before it reaches the cooler.....

EDIT:

anywhere between the trans and the radiator is fine it will not lose enough temp to notice

I've simultaniously posted a few times and looked like an idiot but nobody noticed since I look like an idiot regularly.
I just figured you missed it in the post.

when it goes south the trans temp just keeps rising and most times the trans is running way too hot but operating below the TFT sensors preprogramed threshold for a MIL light
Off Topic for this forum, but how do you disable the thermal bypass on the 4R75E? Looks easy enough to remove and connect the line ends with a coupling. Also, what fails in them? I've been trying to find out more about that device for a while now. There's nothing in my factory manual, other than that it exists. On fella on the F-150 board said it opened at 130F but that's the extent of the info I have.

Finally, where do you recommend putting the temp sensor.. on the 4R75E and the C6. As I mentioned earlier, I usually have them in three places, just for fun but if you were recommending just ONE location, where would it be. On the 4R75E, I have heard there is a port on the case that's good for a sender but I don't know what temp it reads. I don't know of any places on the C6 like that, so I guess the OUT line to the cooler???

My observations from what trans tech has posted the best place for temp. sender is in the line out of trans. to cooler.
You probably already saw that though.

the thermal bypass valve on the 4r-75e is always open and bypassing until the fluid temp reaches approximately 170 degrees
there is a plug on the bottom retained by a snap ring
if you remove it and pull the plug out the thermostat is mounted on a pin on the plug
as the temp rises the themostat rises on the pin to block the bypass port
you can install a small diameter spring under the thermostat to hold it in the up position causing the bypass to be disabled and fluid will always flow through the coolers
