Really? I don't know if it was the size differance but I liked my 38x12.50 TSLs alot better then my 35x12.50 SSRs. They do ride alot better, and are a great mud tire, but I still think the bias ply does better. Look into the 37 cooper STTs. These are a GREAT radial tire and will ride ALOT better on the highway
Even though the design is similar, the construction takes awy from some off road performance. The less pliable sidewall and stiff construction makes this tire a great on road tire, and as agressive as they get, however even airing down does not make it perform like other bias ply tires.
I did get over 40K from a set though. This was on a Super duty that towed a large trailer quite a bit.
Dont get me wrong, I like the SSR, but it is not identical to the other bias ply tires in this category with regards to off road performance.
I've never had TSLs but I have had BFG MTs, SSRs, and BFG ATs. Out of the three I'll only use the SSRs again. All were good tires, but the BFG MT wasn't that great on the road and was OK in the mud. The ATs are good on the road, but almost as noisy as an MT anyway and not good in mud. The SSRs were awesome all around. Great on the road, not too loud, and awesome offroad.
I like the boggers but I have to drive about 80 miles to the mudbog i plan on running. Not doing it but maybe twice a year and is a hunting truck other than that. I think the SSRs fit the bill.
The SSR's are awesome tires on the street. The tread pattern is so similiar to the TSLs to they're pretty comparable in the rocks
but the edge goes to the TSL's for me, just a little more tread depth and the solid lugs are just a bit stronger. They tend to hold onto a ledge better than the radials.
For mud use, meh sorry I can't give an opinion, I hate mud.

x2 This is pretty much my exact experiences. When I got my BFGs, I thought I was king of the bog.The SSRs ride as good on the street as the BFG, and are MUCH better offroad.
ive been comparing the two for quite a while and ive come to the conclusion that if you see more mud than anything else TSL if it sees more highway SSR...i see about 50/50 so i plan on going up to 36" TSL radials in the summer they will be better then the TSL bias ply on highways but better then the SSR in mud ...i think they are pretty close in performance any where you look so it all depends who you ask and what YOU want
I have run all kinds of tires the ssr's are good the only thing is they have a much thinner side wall then the bias. I put a 6" gash in the side wall last time I went out
Well, I just bought my 4x4 van back from the guy I sold it to almost two years ago when a tree got dropped on it. I had put on new SSRs and after driving it again, I have to say I like the SSRs. I know when I towed with it they were firm and did not sway. They do hum a bit.
Best of all, they are excellent in dirt and mud and when you spend that much on a mud tire it might as well be good in the mud more then anything else :-) I think mine are 8 plys 33x12.50x16.50.
I am probably going to go to 17" or 18" wheels and eventually ditch the 16.50 tires.
I am currently running Maxxis Bighorns on my B2 and they have done excellent for a small tire, I do not know how they would compare in a bigger size.
I was looking at getting GroundHawgs, but, they have nothing in the radial 33 sizes.
I have never bought a new set of Boggers, but, if I had to rate 33s and larger for off road I would go:
1) boggers
2) ground hawgs
3) ssr
I might try the Maxxis Bighorn in 33s, looking into that now since the van needs two new front tires. It had used Discoverer SSTs (about 11/32s), they pretty much should be called all terrain and not a mud tire.
