1996 Bronco EB. I have 4-wheel drive with electric push button. When 4-wheel drive engages I get a binding sound. Not sure if it's coming from the right or left side. I've never taken this type of set-up apart before and don't know what to look for to tell if parts are damaged or worn. The 4-wheel drive has not be used much. Vehicle has 48,000 miles on it and has been stored winters.
take the 4x4 cover on the hubs off n u have to pick the lock ring out, it should all pull out, i had a prob with mine so like u said the manual ones r best i bought a set of the manual hubs instead of messin with thos P.I.A's. mine would click n pop so i just took em off,
You probably know this, never use 4wd on dry pavement. The binding may damage something. I can always hear when 4wd is engaged but it is not very loud. Like yours, my 4wd had not been used in years and was very noisey the first few times I used it after finally getting the shift motor to engage. You might want to get it on a lift and run it in 4wd to locate the noise. Mine is fine now as the noise went away. I suspected rust in the front differential since grease has not been slung around. Yes, I still have the auto hubs, and they worked last weekend at 185K miles...I know the day will come.... May I suggest you shift into 4L monthly to keep the shift motor free? I do it in the driveway sitting still and just push buttons several times.
If I take the cap off and take the snap ring out, will I be able to see physical damage on the hub? Can you tell me what to look for? We got five inches of snow last night and I was using 4WD on the way home from work. I cycled in-and-out of 4WD and couldn't be sure they were disengaging completely. When I got home and put vehicle in garage I had it in 2WD.
Thanx for the compliment on the low mileage Bronco. My daughter's driving my pickup so I'm forced to use my "baby" until I can find the right pickup - and this one will be for me.
For the auto hubs...if you put in 4wd and went forward...after you take it out of 4wd you must back up 10-20 feet to disengage the hubs. If your first move in 4wd was in reverse, do the opposite of above.
I didn`t know the hubs do not release when I push the switch. I know if they don`t release you need to back up some. They seemed to go in and out very smooth. Now I seem to hear the binding or clicking sound. I really would like to keep stock if I can. Hoping not to have to use next winter. Salt is OK on food but not on my truck. Thanks for your help
Its very possible one of your front universals is dry. It may be shot. You should shift to four wheel every month (and drive) it mixes the oil. You dont need to lock the wheels. If you have auto hubs and on dry pavement, you dont need to turn the steering wheel.
