I need to grease my 89 Bronco II 4 wheel drive hub bearings. According to the Chiltons I need a 2 & 3/8 in hex socket to remove the adjusting lock nut on the hubs. The socket is different than the one for the manual hubs. Advance Auto only has the manual socket. Where can I get the correct socket? If the worse case will a large pipe wrench work?? any ideas?
My shop manual says the same thing, I dunno if a pipe wrench is a good idea. Also If I remember you need to torque that nut down to a specific torque so I would search for a socket for it.
I got mine at Napa (I don't know why most places have such a hard time with that auto hub socket).
Channel locks or other pipe wrench should be good enough for getting it off; it isn't on very tight (16 in lbs). You might be able to get off simply with your hands. Canadianice is correct about putting things back together. It would be a lot easier to get it set correctly with the proper socket (and a good inch-lb torque wrench).
Just about any parts store has them. Napa had one but too much money for my empty pockets. Wound up at Salvo where they had a generous supply of all the hub sockets and cheap too.
