There are no casting numbers on the heads on my 460. I have looked at other heads at a machine shop and the casting numbers were very easy to see. on both sides of my engine there is not even a shadow of what might have been a number. Is there any other way to tell which heads I have? Might they be after market heads with the numbers somewhere else? If so where might it be. This is mainly curiousity on my part as I have no immediate plans to tear the engine down, but I am interested. Thanks alot, Mike
quite common on the later heads to not have casting numbers visible on them.
i s this a carbed engine or fuel injected engine? also take the valve covers off and look at the rocker arms. aftermarket heads (and the early pre 72 heads) all have rocker studs with rocker arms held down with nuts. later heads had bolt down style rocker arms that attach to head with a bolt.
they are more than likely a derivative of the D3VE heads if a carbed engine and fuely heads (either E6 or E7TE heads) if fuel injected.
so to kinda hijack and follow up, i am wondering the same thing a Mike in Ohio, mine is a 77 carbed engine with no markings that i can see. it does have the bolt down rockers,
also what is the big difference from D3VE and D0VE heads?
DOVE heads have 75 - 77 cc chambers while the D3VE heads have 95cc chambers. putting the DOVE heads on in place of the D3's will gain you approx 1 pt of compression.
also the DOVE heads have screw in rocker studs while the D3VE heads have bolt down rocker arms.
that are the 2 major differences between the two. the valve lenghts are also different but the valve sizes and port layout and volume are pretty well identical between the two heads. the DOVE heads are easier to modify as you can change rocker studs out to get adjustable valvetrain while on the D3 you have to machine the pads down and drill and tap them to install rocker studs or get a conversion kit.
