Ok thanks, as far as I can tell the only issue I am going to have is with the drain plug in the oil pan. I should be able to weld it shut and relocate the drain plug to the back side of the sump. Or get one of those deals that sucks the oil out of the dipstick tube when it comes time to change oil.
A front sump pan can be used but it's a PITA. A better idea would be to use the rear sump pan from a 460 powered 4x4 truck. Yes 429 and 460 pans interchange. Econoline vans used the same pan. You'll have to get the oil pickup tube, dipstick and distick tube to go with it. Oh and yes the rear sump will clear the tie rods.
1975/91 Econolines with 460's all have a rear sump oil pan.
Prior to 1983, before there were all these various aftermarket sellers of oil pans, the Econoline pan was used on all the 429/460 4WD swaps, because it was the only one that was available.
Also used with 2WD 429/460 swaps.
DO NOT FORGET THIS: With a rear sump Econoline pan, you need the special stud that attaches the oil pickup screen and tube.
Van pans are mid sump aren't they? I have had three differen't 460 pans, a front sump from a car, a rear sump from a truck, and a mid sump I always thought was from a van. Dan
when mine was 2wd i used a pan from an 85-up 460 truck, also needed was pick up tube and oil pump. at the time all was avilable from ford yet
I think they still sell it as a kit including oil pan, oil pick up tube, dipstick and tube, special main cap bolt and gasket for about $100.00. It comes with everything You need except an oil pump, which is readily available from Ford or most any parts store. Summit racing sells the kit as a swap pan to put the 429/460 into a 1979-2004 mustang.
