Hey guys, we are looking at an 82 stepside w/ inline 6. The motor runs real rough, and dies after you let off the accl. He claims it needs a new carb. Does that sound like a maybe? Also, can the carb be rebuilt or better to just change it out? If we do get it, i have my work cut out for me by haveing to repair the frame, it has some bad rust spots on it that i am going to weld some flat plate over. Info and insight needed, i am an idi person, dont mess with gas engines much. Thankz in advance ~ JM
A Carb Can make it run rough, Look at the Carb closely, Is it dirty?
It's Always better to rebuild your own that to get a rebuilt unit. You Can't always do that though and may need a new one. Throttle Body worn out etc... Just make sure you get the SAME exact Carb if you swap them out. There is at least 20 different calibrations for this engine. You get a carb that isn't correct for the calibration and it can cause all types of weird problems.
Good News is the Carter YF and YFA are the easiest Carbs to Rebuild in these trucks, so that's what I'd try.
As for the frame, that would make me look for another truck, IMO. But I'm in rust free California.
