I got the tranny out this morning and pulled apart. What a mess. All the clutches are gone, the planetary housings are ate-up and to beat all the needle bearings in the back are totally shot. after checking prices on all the stuff needed (enough to pay off Obama's bail out plan) I am going for a used one from local yard.
Right now the $350 yard trans is alot. They cut our hours to 32 a week and we were shut down last week all together. So I have to make due with what is cheap.
I hear that. It's hard to even have a hobby right now. I haven't worked in 3 weeks. Been putting an efi 460 in my 89 f150 where a 300 used to sit. luckily I have only about $40 into the swap, and i'm almost done with it. Not counting the $250 I paid for the 88 F350 (was low on oil, owner thought the oil pump went out) or the $75 I paid for the 89 F150 (the owner ran the c6 out of fluid). Thanks to 2 people being too lazy to check their equipment, I'm going to have a play toy.
I found out that the rad cooler is plugged guess all that heat (over about a 300 mile drive) got to it. I am sure that it was getting to little fluid flow before that as well. never thought about checking this before. Now it will be one of my 6 month checks!
Not to be an ****, but I recommend checking all fluids every 2 weeks. It only takes 15 min to pull all dipsticks, open the rad cap, and pull the axles plugs to make sure they're full of gear oil
The trans was full and was when I pulled it. It was just not getting to the cooler. Don't know of a way to check that part without pulling the lines. Maybe put in a clear piece of house?
No not at all. Makes me wonder if some thing let go an plugged it up and it stopped flowing. I ran it pretty hard to get my kids and back that night. They live about five hours away and thier mom meets me about halfway most time. I was running late that night.
Thanks, I have another exrenal cooler in the garage I might just add it on for safety sake. The trans I put in today form the local yard is a nice one. I pulled the pan off to put in a new filter and the fluid inside was so clean it looked new. The filter that was in ti seemed to be like new as well and the inside was real pretty lol. The pump also looked new as did the converter. Makes me wonder if the po had it rebuilt before the motor blew in the truck? I know it blew because the yard owner told me it was when I was looking for a motor for my swap.
