I just bought an '01 Escape XLS. I noticed at night the small LCD screen that displays the mileage and the gear is not illuminated although the rest of the gauges and dials are. It is difficult to see the screen.
I was wondering if it is supposed to be illuminated or do I have a burned out bulb(s)?
Maybe the instrument panel is different on my '01, but the instructions posted in the link above didn't help. I removed the trim piece, which was held on with two hex head screws, then removed four more around the instrument cluster in order to snap out the clear plastic cover. This exposed the face of the panel where I saw three Torx head screws.
I was unable to tilt the cluster forward as described in the link. There are two bundles of wires attached to two plugs at the top of the cluster.
I could get my hand behind the cluster which seems to be one unit. I could not feel any bulbs or anything there and surmised the bulbs must be accessed through the front by removing the Trox screws, removing the instrument face, and giving me access to the interior where I might find the illumination bulbs. Not so. After removing the screws, I gave up trying to access the inside of the cluster. I was afraid I was going to screw something up.
It is easier to get to the back of the cluster by unplugging the two wiring harnesses at top. I should have added that to the original post.
I nearly did that but chickened out. I am always afraid I am going to screw up some fragile electronic component and end up paying through the *ss to fix my mistake.
I just bought this Escape from a dealer who promised to "make sure it was right," so I think I am going to take it back and have them do it. If they balk, then I will try again.
The problem is resolved! I ran back to the dealer where I bought the Escape and and hour later and several cups of free coffee later, all was fixed at no charge.
Now I gotta get to work on the rattling rear passenger door panel...
