ive got a 82f350 with a 351m and 4speed with granny top speed is 45 to 55 is there anything i can do to get more top end without cutting low end perforance life a 5peed does a 5speed have granny in it and will it bolt up to a 351m advice needed please help thanks
Theoretically, a zf 5speed that is made for a 460 will fit. I haven't heard of anyone doing it, but the bellhousing pattern is the same, and since the bell on the zf is made onto the zf, you will have to get a zf that was behind a 460. You might have to do some head scratching to get the clutch stuff to fit up.
The zf does have a granny, and has the overdrive too.
Really, the cheapest way for you to lower the rpms would be to change the rearend ratio. True, this will cut your low end performance some, but I don't think you will ever get in a bind were you can't get going since you do have the granny gear. You might find yourself downshifting more than you normally would, but you will be doing that with the overdrive tranny too.
The really nice way to go would be to install a GV overdrive unit. This will give you up to 8 gears forward, and two reverse, since it's setup to split the gears like the big trucks. Only trouble is it's very expensive(close to $3000).
what gears do you have in the rear end.like franklin said that probably would be the cheapest way to go.i had a gto with 456 gears ,was good at the drags ,but on the freeway 50 mph.really sucked.my f250 has 355 gears and has good bottom end and cruses at 2500 rpm at 65.that 4 speed has a low 1st gear anyways.
The ZF trans DOES NOT have a "granny low" first gear. I have one in an 89 F-Superduty, and OH how I wish it did have granny low. They do, however, have overdrive.

Define granny low. I have a ZF from a 1990 ford and I never use 1st gear unless I have a loaded trailer. Top speed is just under 10mph. In my opinion, thats a granny gear.
To the OP, you could also try running taller rear tires(if you have a 2wd) to lower your cruising RPM. It probably wont make a huge difference, but every little bit could help.

I will agree 1st on the Ford spec zf is not as low as the old 4 speeds, but some people still consider it a granny gear. I debated about it too, but my definition of a "granny gear" would be a 1st gear that you do not really need to use when taking off from a standstill. The couple of zf's I have driven do qualify under this definition. Both trucks start out fine in 2nd gear with no load or a very light load in the bed, and on level ground.
One thing I do not like about the zf is reverse. It's way too high.
