Valve stem seals
Back to topic: I am interested in the installed height and outside diameter of the Viton seals that do not require machine work. That would be awesome info to have.
While on the subject: Are they interference fit like all the others? Do they require any extra means of securement?
TIA, Mike

Well Barry has something on me there, Becuase all the positive lock seals I have ever used, I had to undercut the valve boss so they would have a place to lock onto....
So Not machining them is news to me....Must be the latest hot ticket?? Just to push them on ??

valve stem seals
They show a #375 vsb universal 3/8 x .530
Also a #373 vsb universal 3/8 x .500
Other stock umbrella seals are listed there too.
My guide od is .530 so I'll give the #375's a try.
Thanks Barry!

So, what did anyone figure out about valve seals? While I have my heads off I'd like to replace the valve seals with quality ones.....
The backs of my valves have MAJOR buildup within only 20,000 miles!!

positive stop viton seals without machining
I know this is an old thread, but I just went through this common problem myself and the info is scarce. My 65 390 with only 69K original miles salvaged from a long parked car smoked and oil fouled the plugs. A set of .562 seals did not fit properly and leaked badly. Alex's parts carries a set of .620 to .660 seals that fit my stock heads perfectly. The viton seals seat firmly on the unmachined guides with a firm push by hand. Part number is vss-407 and they are only 21$ for a set of 16. I just got done installing them and used the rope trick to hold the valves and not pull the heads. FTE is a huge info resource for our old trucks so I wanted to share this useful info for others that have a smoky fe. Thanks.
alex's parts valve seals
I just wanted to post the info and a great supplier because I had a tough time finding the right parts myself. I had previously gotten smaller diameter viton seals based on reported dimensions of stock guides I found online. The steel collar wouldn't fit over the guide, without machining, and they quickly broke and leaked like crazy. Alex is the only supplier I have found that carries these bigger seals with a spring ring collar. He also carries other size seals and guide cutters. He also answered the phone and gave me great tech help. Hope this helps some other fe guys with what seems to be a common problem. FTE is an awesome resource!
