^^^ what he said get the 4.0 ranger or 4.3 s10 the smaller motors arent going to be able to pull as well if you intend on towing a bit.

I bought my 1991 Chevy S-10 brand new and am still driving it today with
197,000 miles with the original, motor, tranny and clutch still working fine.

I have driven newer Rangers 1997 and a 2003 at work and they have been fantastic.
You cannot lose with either !!

how old are you?
my first car was a 5.0 stang and since then ive had many different vehicles, and some i wish i still had

my suggestion would be the ranger or s-10 and then buy a nicer 4x4 "toy" for a second vehicle that you can have some fun with

Okay. Thanks for the advice. I am just curious what the reasoning in those are though? Better gas mileage? Less problems? Or more power?

lol okay thanks. And the truck my dad had found was a 5 speed and i preffer automatic since that is what I am use to. What are the benefits/negatives of having and not having a 5 speed?

My 91 S-10 gets about 28-30 mpg. which is great for its age and is a 5 speed.
Automatics do not get as good of gas mileage

Wow, that is great gas mileage. So just to make sure that is the only advantage to 5 speeds? How much of a difference would it make gas mileage wise between a 5 speed and a automatic if you had to guess? And I might be able to use that just for every day use then use my dads auction truck for muddin lol.

I would prefer an automatic, but will stick with the 5 speed, cause of the
mileage and they are so easy to drive.
Just a guess is there is probably about a 5-7 mpg difference...at least with
the S-10 !

Wow, that is crazy. Well, you say they are easy to drive though?? Because I figured they would be hard. I have never driven one except for my dirt bikes which do not really count :P.. I have always driven automatics and I figured that they would be much easier.?.?

Driving a stick is not a hard thing to learn, it does not take long and having experience with dirt bikes will help.

I recomended the 4.0 and the 4.3 because they have considerably more power than the smaller 6s and 4 bangers. Especially if you want to get a lift and bigger tires. The Explorer in my sig has the 4.0 and it still does not have a lot of power, the smaller motors are even worse and do not perform up to my expectations empty, let alone when hauling even a few hundred pounds. Trust me, get the bigger motor.

They are so easy to drive with the hydraulic clutch and shifts with one finger.
I have the 2.8 and the 4.3 is much stronger but worse gas mileage.

I agree with another poster, get you a small Ranger or S-10 as a daily driver and then a larger 4X4 as a weekend back up truck.

My backup is a 1988 F-250 4X4

Of the ones you listed I would pick the first one.

1994 Ford F150 2WD SuperCab
$2,500

Cars For Sale: Car Details - AutoTrader.com

However, if it is not really what you want, then keep looking.

The 5 speeds do tend to get better milage especially in something like an S10. However, in the full size F150s like ours, I have not really seen any 5 speeds that get much if any better than an overdrive automatic.

My first truck was a 1992 ranger 2wd with the 3.0 and a 5 speed. Great truck with plenty of power. I loved that thing then when I traded that in I got a 1994 ranger 4wd with the 4.0 and a 5 speed and it had 31 inch tires on it and had more than enough power. They are great little trucks so I think you would like it. My friend did have a 93 2wd with the 2.3 and a 5 speed and it was a complete dog but it all depends what you want to do with it. Good luck on the search and let us know what you end up with!

Everyone has their take on manual vs. automatic. In my book, here are the pro's of each:

Auto:
no 'learning curve' - which is very short with a manual anyway, but it's there
less effort while driving, i.e. no shifting

Manual:
better gas mileage
less moving parts inside the tranny, so they last longer
also easier to diagnose when something does go wrong
more control over gear changes
more power available
no 'hesitation' if you have to step on the gas to get out of the way in a hurry

Plus, they're simply more fun to drive.
