The Beast is giving me some troubles and I had hoped you could maybe help.
At first, she was fine. Just a little shudder going up hill, which I thought was just from sitting unused for a month or more. But, it's getting worse. It starts to shudder and act like it might stall, especially going slow, up a hill. It hasn't stalled yet, but feels like it could. It kind of feels like it's running out of gas, but I know it's not. I have duel tanks, but the back is empty and I'm running off the front.
I will be taking it to a mechanic in a few days, but thought I could get some ideas first. If I can go to the garage with an idea, maybe the grease monkey won't just think i'm a dumb girl with a truckm ya know?
I dont know much else, but these are the specs I have, taken from the ebay ad I got it from....
1996 FORD F-250 XLT, EXT. CAB, 4X4. THE SPECS FOR THIS TRUCK IS AS FOLLOWS:
It sounds as though it could be a fuel problem.. but it could be a lot of things...........
Fuel Filter may need to be replaced.
Bad Spark Plugs or Wires
Fuel Pump going out
Vacuum Leak at your Throttle Body or Intake Manifold, or elsewhere
Also, you said that the truck had been sitting for a while. It could be that moisture built up in your fuel system somewhere. It could also be that moisture built up under the distributor cap. These are all things you can check yourself before dropping the big bucks at the shop. Also, sometimes catalytic converters clog up and can be the cause of lack of power.

thanx! i wish I could check, but I have NO clue anymore. My first car was a Horizon...little P.O.S., but I loved it and I did all the work on it, like breaks, oil, hose changes. It never needed anything major though. Now, i don't even remember anything about engines and cars.
Another good investment would be a Hayne's manual for your truck... That way you could look in the troubleshooting areas of the manual and get step by step info on how to fix stuff.... or at least ideas on what is wrong.
1) Ford issued a TSB in the 93 timeframe for the 1-5-4 engines the remove wire 8 from the stock loom routing and move away from 7 (light throttle surging due to crossfire)
2) is the auto an E4OD? If so, this will seem weird but change the fluid and when done add a tube of 'Dr Trannys Shudder fix' from NAPA. Run it warm (it wont lockup until the coolant is warm) and cycle thru a few lockups. The shudder will be diminished or outright gone. I was skeptical myself until I did this on an E4OD equipped 90 I had
3) get rid of the nerf bars. clearly they are at fault ;-)
Sounds like bad fuel i would try draining the tank and putting fresh in. You might also try some seafoam in the new tank, this will dry any old fuel lift in the systemand clean the injecters and such. Also, fut on a new fuel filter.
I recently had a similar problem in my 1/2 ton 5.0 auto. Replaced plugs, wires, and cap to correct misfires. Took it to the dealer and had them flush and fill trans with new fluid- now there is no shudder.
Keep it simple, try the fuel filter first. Then work thru the rest of these good suggestions. and get a haynes manual for your truck, its a great reference material.
Very first thing I would do is check the fuel pressure. Low fuel pressure can certainly cause the symptoms you are describing. This can be the result of a bad fpr, weak fuel pump, or a plugged fuel filter.
WVMama78,
Have you done a complete tune up with plugs, wires, cap, rotor and fuel filter? What type of parts were used for the tune up? Where they autolite plugs, wires and bronze tipped (not aluminum) cap & rotor. The aluminum cap & rotor will break down quickly and electrolysis will form which will cause a miss! I would suggest you check the cap and rotor to see what type ..aluminum or bronze tipped? This is one quick & easy way to eliminate this as possible problem to determine if you truely have a transmission problem or just need a good tuneup. Good luck!

Good advice, 1st things to do if the truck sat for a while. Fuel nowdays especially ethanol will get funky real quick. Start with the easy less expensive things 1st and go from there. Good Luck
check stored dtc's I bet you get a fault in the pcm to fuel pump code. I had the same problem. It was a bad connection from the pcm to the fuel pump. check stored codes and see what you find.
Anyone know how this turned out? I had a shudder in my '95 F-250. I replaced the O2 sensor and no more shudder. May not be related at all, I'm not a mechanic.

well, i think I may have figured it out just this morning! I think I was gunning it too hard too soon after starting . Was shuddering real bad this morning. I stopped, turned it off and than turned it back on. Went to put it in park and DH says " you have to wait about 12 more seconds. I did and no more shudder. Is it so wrong to just want to GO!!!1!
hope my lead food was the only thing standing between me and a less jerky ride
