Ok, I just replaced the wheel bearings on the drivers side front. The single spindle nut design backed off and let the wheel get so loose that the only thing holding it on was the disk brake. (brake job comming)
Anyways, I've had enough of the single nut backing off, so I went to carquest and got the old double nut with keyed washer that worked for years. It just so happens that the guy at the counter has a 94 Bronco and he says do you have auto hubs. I told him I dont and he said that I should have converted to the double nut when I installed the warn hubs.
He said the auto hubs go with the single nut and the double nut goes with manual hubs. He said that he bought a kit with the nuts and hubs together.
I've never heard of this. My old 88' Bronco had double nuts and auto hubs. (that I changed) I'm sure it was stock even though I bought it used. I got My current 90' Broncowith manual hubs and singlenut. I dont know if it was changed. Did all auto hubs come with push button 4 wheel drive?
In any case, I now have the set up I like and recomended by this guy. So I really dont care. But, for the life of me, I cant see how the nuts can efect the hubs or vice-versa. Anybody else ever hear of this?
By the way, this is the first time I have replaced the bearings on either truck in twenty years. So running 38" tires and large offset wheels doesnt seem to hurt them.
That one is news to me too. My '92 and my '93 both have/had the double nut and the '92 definitely started out with auto hubs and the double nut. The '93 had Warn manuals on it when I bought it and I just swapped in the Mile Marker all-stainless ones leaving the spindle nut the same as it had been.
I had a 89 bronco with manual hubs and the single nut, the manual hubs on every 80 to 96 ford were made by warn wern't they, never owned the auto's. did the nut back off it self or when you did the torquing procedure.
When I was in the carquest, they had a book with warn auto hubs. I've never seen em unless they make em for Ford. I use to have warn auto hubs on my old Scout. They worked good. But they dont make that style anymore. (and they wont go no our trucks unless you change the discs.)
The nut backed off by itself. I noticed the key is kind of resessed on it. I think it spins around which allows it to get loose. I had a hell of a time getting it off. It neerly runed the threds.
