Its coming time for me to be buying my first vehicle. I always wanted a truck and especially a F-150. I want to get a used Auto 4x4 that is in good shape. I want a 4x4 because I would like to lift it up , big tires , and go off roading with my buddies who are already driving. I really had my eye on a 1996 F-150
Would a Auto 4x4 F-150 be a good first truck?

That would be a great first truck--price is a matter of how nice(or not ) and where---here in NH you can find that truck -needing some fixing for $1500 or nice for around $3500--I have a 96 4x4 (6 cyl-4.9) paid $500 for it with a blown clutch--LOVE IT !!!!!!
Buy a repair manual and have FUN !!!
Be sure to get a short wheelbase/short box/regular cab truck. This type of truck is more manageable in traffic and for u turns--as manageable as a full size truck gets!! And easier to park and takes up less garage space-and importantly: looks cute--as the wife says.
Try to find a truck that has been garaged all of its life and has had only a single owner--preferably middleaged.
I had a 97 f-150 4x4 and I ran it up to 205,000 miles with no problems and then sold it. Great truck. I realize its a different body but I now have a 96 f-250 with the 5.8 and its also a great truck. I think that would be perfect for a first vehicle. From my experience they take alot of abuse and keep on ticking. Good luck!
i personaly would get a stick and manual hubs, and single cab long bed. around here they are half way cheap right now 1500-2500 but that all depends what you get, if you want to lift it make sure the frame and drive line are in good shape
if you are going to want more than like 35in tires i would go with an f350 if i bought my truck i would have but my mom's friend died and left it to me in the will
with an f-350 you get a solid dana 60 axle that is practically unbreakable unless you have like 44in boggers and 700hp
that was the only dana 60 i have ever seen break, my buddy swapped one into his 73 chevy truck with 44in boggers and i built him a 700hp big block chevy (502) he was in clay burried to the doors and stomped on it and it blew up ripped the pinion teeth off and broke his passenger side axle but he also had a detroit locker
If you can find an ext cab short box get it, the extra cab room is sooo nice and the turning radius still isnt too bad. I scored my 94 for $500, spent $600 getting all the fluids changed aswell as some tranny sensors and the 351 purrs along great.
If your gonna run bigger tires your gonna want more than the 302 for power, and your right for wanting an auto, having to downshift in the middle of a mud hole is a PITA!
