I saw a Honda Rigeline this weekend pulling(or should I say trying to) a flat deck with a '04-'08 F150 supercrew 4X4. I think he must have been slightly over weight!!
the ridgeline has a feature that i do like though. in the mini-box, there's a sealed trunk compartment. you could fit quite a bit of stuff in there, its probably 10-12" deep and maybe 3'6" square...
i've never overloaded my trucks... carried a full deck package in my '96... it was 2 decks, one measuring 20x22, the other 14x22... took all the joist and beam material first load, then the decking. let me tell ya, she was a load!! i had quite a load of shingles in my '02 s'crew... i figured it to be around 2300lbs (no bs) but it didn't bother me as it was a short trip, about 4 miles, and i had the overload airbags on that truck. put about 85psi in them and you could hardly tell there was a load aboard... got quite a few looks from the lumberyard guys...
I think theres more then a few of us that have overloaded a pickup truck from time to time!
You should see my old half ton when I put a load of gravel in the back!
The beekeeper I used to work for had 4 trucks. 1 ford and 3 bowties. They had 16' steel decks and we could get 200 honey supers on them loaded 5 boxes high. MT boxes, that was a not bad load, but full boxes mid season, that was nuts!!!! A few times we had to go 6 boxes high when we ran out of room. I remember that old Ford ('74 F350) just floating. We had to drive slow. had a hard time steering too. Good times. We didn't often load them that bad though.
I wasn't around yet to see this, but my dad has this one story he loves to tell. (Note: it could be a "the older I get the better I was" story)
Grandpa (then dad, then me, lol) had a 68 Chevy 1/2 ton long box. One day dad took off to Hartney to pick up a load of chemical for the farm. They threw all the chemical on, and when dad went to drive away, the stud on the ball was chewing into the pavement.
I've never overloaded my truck in that way, but I've definitely over-used them. When I lived in Fernie, I roomed with a farmer from Rosetown, Sask. (he ran groomers on the ski hill in the winter) and he had a 2500 Dodge Diesel. It was spring time, when everyone was heading home. He lent his truck to this other guy to take a bunch of garbage to the dump. Well, the guy put the farmers truck in the ditch. So, off we went to fetch him. We hooked up my 2.9 Ranger to it, and I was SO CLOSE to pulling him out. I could pull him at least 10 kmh through the ditch, but the damned front end wouldn't jump up onto the road!!
Then there was the time I was going to a demo derby that unknown to me, was cancelled. Actually, it was never organized. The douchebag who tried to organize it never got permission from the town. Anyway, we showed up, and were told by the MAYOR that it wasn't on. She was cool about it, just told us there was no derby. I was so frickin mad, I drove the hour home, with a full box of tools, and demo car on the trailer.... at 140.
Finally, there's the two seperate occasions where I got our forklift stuck at work (weighs 9200lbs I think) and pulled it out with my current Ranger. Couldn't get the smell of burning clutch out of my nose for at least an hour.
