I'm not 100% sure on the 300, but somewhere on this site I believe there are procedures for testing the sensor with a voltmeter. I've known some who had an EGR issue who have checked all their vacuum lines and replaced as necessary as well as cleaned the EGR valve and cleared that part of the problem up. Might be also that the valve has gone bad and requires replacement to get the EGR sensor to see that it's working. If the sensor is like the one for the 2.9 V6, it's not cheap and if possible, I would avoid spending the money on it unless absolutely neccessary. I've never dealt with the thermactor setup on these engines, maybe someone else has some insight.

If you don't already have a Haynes or Chilton's manual, might want to get one - or use the online repair guide on AutoZone's site. You should at least be able to identify the pieces and parts with that, if not more.

I don't want to sound like a smart *** and on offense intended, but you had better buy a book on your year of truck and read it. Chilton has one just for 87-93 Ford Full sized trucks. You are passing up information from the check engine codes that might just fix your problem. If you don't feel comfortable doing these things , possibly you should have a mechanic look at it.

I buy a book for every truck i have ever had. I'm comfortable doing anything and have the tools and the ability to do anything. I'm just not sure what to do. I'm going to start checking the egr system and vacume lines.

Checking your EGR system isn't too bad. You'll need an ohmmeter - a cheap one will do just fine - and a vacuum tool. If you've got one of the books it should walk you directly through how to check things out.
