DP Tuner Question

I plan on purchasing a DP tuner soon & looking over the tunes have had a few questions about which would best fit my applications. I have a 2001 4x4 cc with a 7.3 & an auto tranny which i purchased last year. My 1st question is about the high idle tune. When its cold outside, my truck automatically idles up to around 900-1000 rpm.. Will the high idle tune be much different than what the truck already does?

My other questions are about every day driving & hauling/towing. I'd have to say better than 1/2 of my driving is back & forth to work..approx 14 miles with about 13 stop lights in between..lol From what I am reading, would 80 econo be my best "every day driving" tune? I'm guessing 60 econo is more for driving on the interstate where stopping is a minimum?

My last concern is heavier use.. I have a woodstove, so I'm hauling firewood a good bit, but my biggest concern is, we have a 31 ft fifth wheel camper that weighs about 7500 empty. The majority of our camping will be within 2-4 hours from home in western Pa, which by no means has major mountains to pull, but on the way north to our favorite place theres guite a few hills & longer grades to go up & down. This is where I am concerned on the towing tunes. I'm guessing 80 econo wouldn't be a good tune to haul a load of heavy green firewood. I'm also wondering about the tow tunes.. On the DP site, I see my camper falls in the 80 tow category of 5 -9 k, but I think I remember people saying about the 60 tow for pulling up hills... I want to get the right towing tune(s) plus the decel tune. Which by the way, does anyone have any input on the decel tune? likes/dislikes??

I really wish I could afford to just fill up the 16 position chip, but unfortunately... thats not the case. I just want to make sure I get what i need for my applications & still get a play tune or 2 & not have to remortgage my house to buy the chip & gauges..lol

Also, one last question.. Whats everyones thoughts between getting the tunes with codes vs gettting an OBA??

Thanks in advance everyone !!!

OK. I'll try to address a few of your questions. I use the 80 econo tune for everyday driving and highway driving. Gets the best all around performance and mileage. Even hauling lumber and stuff in the bed, I still keep it in 80e. I pull a 6000# 5'ver up in the Rocky Mountains or flat highways and use my 60 tow program for that. I also will hitch my 13' ATV trailer either to the back of the 5'ver or by itself and use the 60 tow as well. It allows the best shift strategy for the load but has plenty of power to pass slowpokes and semi's. Still the best thing i can recommend is to call Jody and explain exactly what you have as mods, what conditions you drive typically and go from there. You will not be disappointed with a DP Tuner.

This is my thoughts on this.

0.) no start, for when you have to leave the truck some place you don't trust.

1) stock, for letting someone else drive the truck.

2.) hi idle, for when you want to jump some one or need to warm the truck up.

3.) 60t, for towing.

4.) decel, for towing in mountains or just to help you slow down with a load.

5.) 80e, for daily driving.

6) 120 or 140, for the playing time.

You can see in my sig, I have 9 tunes.

1#Your high idle you got now when you start your truck is the Exhaust back pressure valve opening to get the motor up to operating temps, the high idle tune works when ever you want, cold or warm temp to help with winches, jumpstarting someones batteries ect. Also its good for your turbo to have a constant flow of oil lubing the internals of the turbo(big trucks anyway) and to prevent washing of the cylinders. 2# Before you do the chip its recommended to get a decent air intake or air filter(look up 6637) exhaust and gauges. 80 econo is good for around town and the 60 tow is good for you, i tow the same amout and i got them tunes. Don't know about the decel tune, don't have it, somebody will chime. I went with the code tunes, doesn't bother me, the SES light goes off soon after its set anyways but thats your decision, good luck and Welcome.

I only have 40T and 80E wish I had gotten 60T
I never use 80E unless I want a little more power,I don't like the way the trans works with it
I do all my driving in 40T and seems the milage is better

I think that Chris, hit the nail on the head. Call Jody and see what he recommends. I pull 10-15k regularly and sometimes more. I've got 60t and 80e. I'm gonna get 80t and a play tune sometime soon. Good luck.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. I've already done the 6637 mod & plan on doing the muffler delete for the time being, as well as the gauges & tuner. I'm planning on getting the F-5.. As cool as the F-6 seems, its a little out of my price range. The question I have about the F-5 is, if I want to add different tunes down the road.. do I have to send the tuner back to DP? And if so, I assume the truck is still drivable like completely stock??

Yes but for some reason, when you drive it without your DP in it, it seems soooooooo slooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow!

After reading thru several threads, it seems the 140 tune is the most popular. Is there a lot of difference between the 120 & 140? I was thinking the 120 tune & my reason being, I'd still have a "play" tune, but nothing to extreme. I guess i'm just thinking in terms of being hard on the truck, I want to be able to have fun, just not at the expense of spending more $$$ on repairs..lol I really don't see myself doing a lot more in MODS beside the 6637, gauges & exhaust... at not anytime soon anyhow !!!

ghig1967- the stock high idle is okay, but it usually doesn't up the idle enough to get the EGT's high enough to keep the engine happy when idling. You want to be around 300 degrees when idling, which usually needs around 1200-1300rpm or so.
As far as tunes, I have 60tow, 80eco, 100aggressive, 120race, 140smoke, and 1200rpm high idle. I bought my chip used and have messed in all the settings but 60 tow and I can't tell much of a difference between the 80, 100, and 120. The 140 is a bit of a different animal... when just driving down the road you are just batting along, but then when you squish the skinny pedal the coal starts rolling... I LOVE IT! I'm going to talk to Jody when he's up this way live tuning and see about getting my chip re-burned and getting rid of the 100 and 120 tunes, I don't really see the need for them. I want to keep the 140 smoke for sure though so I can soot ricers and annoying drivers

Hmmm, now you have me wondering if I should just go with the 140 instead of the 120. Especially if you can't tell much difference between the 80 & 120

I would call Jody, but my vote is deff 140 over 120 just for the smoke alone
