97 Ford F250 (old body style). The rear has drum brakes. I have read somewhere that to get the rear drums off, you also have to remove the axle etc. Is that true? I am going to replace the rear shoes, and I have never had the drums off. Any help appreciated.

Is it the full-float (with the hub sticking out) or the semi-float rear (where no hub sticks out from the axle-flange) axle?
I had to change the rear wheel-cylinder on my '97 F-250HD when I first got it, and with the full-float, I recall not having to remove anything; just take off the wheel, and then pull the hub (once I got it freed up from the grime/rust that was keeping it stuck to the hub).
97 OBS the drum just "falls" off, the light duty one with the semi float in 97 was a new body style truck. BFH and some penetrating lube depending on the condition is what you need.
