I just had the first oil change done at the dealer. IT was the 5,000 one and I had them change the oil to. They did the oil and rotate the tires and drained the water/fuel separator for $116 with tax out the door. This price to me isnt worth the hassle of doing it myself. I would have to do it in my driveway and my compressor isnt wired yet in the 1 car garage. I waited at the dealer and I was in and out in 1 hour 30 min. I think my dealer does standard practice of changing the oil every 5,000. They told me they recommend it. I had 173 hours on the clock with mild towing. I feel safe doing it that often and documenting it each time in case a warranty issue would come up.
I did the 5,000 mile oil service myself last weekend. We only have one Ford dealer here and they kept giving me the run around when I wanted a prices for the 5k service visit. I went to parts department and the oil alone was around $115 for 15 quarts so even with the high price of oil here (I paid $100 for 5 gallons of Valvoline Premium Blue which is the cheapest compatible name brand available here) I figure I made out OK (I bought my Motorcraft filter for under $20 through www.rockauto.com.)
I just drove the truck up on Rhino ramps and put a bucket under the oil pan. Probably took about 30-40 minutes of work (more time setting up and cleaning up than actual oil change) total and next time it will be closer to 20-25 now that I know what's where, socket sizes, etc.
I do it myself as well. I use synthetic oil ($80 at walmart for 4 gallons) and Pep Boys ran a special on Fram oil filters so I bought 6 of them ($7). My truck is 4x4 so I dont need ramps, jack or anything. Me and my creeper slide underneath with no problem. I installed a fumoto drain valve so I can drain the oil directly in to old milk/oil jugs. Drain the water separator while I am there too. The whole oil change takes 20 minutes. I thought about having the dealer do it too but I can use synthetic oil and still come out cheaper than the dealer using dino oil. Thats my way of justifying the cost of synthetic oil.
BTW, Wally world has the Fram filters for less than $15. Motorcraft filters are $19 and change. Synthetic oil is $22/gallon so I buy 4 and have about a quart left so every 4th oil change I will only need to buy 3 gallons.
I hate to start a flame war here (but I'm putting on my asbestos underwear now just in case) but there's a very good reason why those Fram filters are so cheap. Of ALL the filters out there the information I've read from different places says Fram should always be your LAST choice. Here's a link to a useful oft-cited source: Oil Filters Revealed - MiniMopar Resources ( http://knizefamily.net/minimopar/oil...reference.html )
It seems Fram consistently makes the lowest quality filters around (at least when it comes to surface area, particle trap size, etc.)
Where do you guys get your oil filter's from and oil ?
I just paid $149. for 5w-40 syn at dealer.
If udiy, what's the saving's ??
I thought about doing it myself, but after adding it all up wasn't
sure it was worth the effort. Unless you feel better about doing it yourself
Actually that is a fair price for a dealer oil change if they used Motorcraft 5W-40 Syn. The Motorcraft 5W-40 Syn retails around $50 for a 5 qt jug. Even at dealer cost it runs about $35 a jug.
I just got a dealer coupon for an oil change and tire rotation for 69 bucks. They sent me one 5 months ago for 30 bucks which I obviously used.
It costs me about $45 to change my oil with filter cost but the headache of not doing it myself for 20 bucks more is worth the trip to the dealer. plus they wash the truck.

While this may hold true for many applications it is not the case with the 6.0 or 6.4 PSD. Racor holds the patent on the OEM filter. The Motorcraft and Fram filters are repackaged Racor filters. Check them out side by side and you will notice they have the same patent numbers on them. The filters that are not Racor OEM produced are WIX and Purolator (unless something has changed just recently on that). As for price, well actually you can by the Racor filter from IH cheaper than you can buy the Fram from Wally world.
The Ford dealer in Norco is using Valvoline filters and oil. Guess I am making an assumption that Valvoline filters are repackaged Racors. They have been using Valvoline filters since 2005 that I know of and probably longer.
LOL, you just reminded me that I need to change the filters in my boat motors This will be my first change so I'll look into everything including Fram but suspect I'll end up with K&N or stock Yamaha OEM.
