Auto Tailgate Lock

Seems like tailgate theft is on the rise again. My was stolen last Thursday from my driveway. Just a reminder to remember to lock it. I just didn't do it that night. I can't find a 2005, 2006 0r 2007 anywhere.

I like the look of the new tailgate anyway and found a guy that buys lot of the truck beds from places that do conversions. He is selling me a brand new 2009 for $450. The guy had a 100 new truck beds in his lot. Most without the tailgates.

He says he buys the entire bed, bumper and tailgate for $1000. It's a good thing to know if you somehow destroy yours.

Anyone know of an auto tailgate lock that will work on a 2009?

Nope, but it must be doable, my buddy had a power wagon for work and the tailgate on that truck locked with the door remote, I thought that was a really sweet feature. I tried to lock my tailgate when I had a quad loaded in the back and the lock is seized up, as are the locks on my doors

The pace edwards lock should work and I bet you can rig one of the solenoids to do the job. Auto locking will require some wiring work. You will need to install a switch on the tailgate, I would suggest a REED magnetic switch, so when the tailgate is closed, the switch will work. You'd need to figure out a low power way to make it momentary to throw the relay.

It's also possible that a spring could be placed to shift the latch so it's always trying to lock. If you can close the tailgate while locked, this would be an easier option.

I think it would be far easier to put a solenoid on the latch, and wire it to the alarm system. So when you arm or lock the doors, the tailgate is locked as well. I've considered doing this to my truck, but haven't gotten around to buying a solenoid.

You might contact Pop & Lock to see if they have one in the works. I installed one of their power lock kits on my 2004 and it works great.

Sorry to hear of the bad guys getting to you.

What works just about as well for a tailgate "lock" is an appropriate-size screw-type hose clamp.

If you grind out just the screwdriver slot so that using a screwdriver is worthless, and then position the clamp so that the clamp screw head is available only when the tailgate is half-way down, you can tighten the clamp using a 5/16" box wrench. Unless they come armed with more than a screwdriver, they aren't going to get it.

About a buck and a quarter, at parts counters near you. Cheap "mod".

It also prevents you from accidentally lifting the tailgate off it's hinge at the wrong time.

Where's this dealer of beds and tailgates in SoCal?

The hose clamp is a great idea, but I take the tailgate off often to load my Lance Truck Camper. It might be the best solution. I was also thinking of filling the slots with epoxy or stripping it for that exact reason.

I would rather have a auto lock because I am lazy.

You would still have to unhook the electrical connector.

Nice, simple, cheap. I dont remove the tailgate that often so this is perfect until I get around to an auto lock. Rep points for originality!!!

Thanks, guys. This is one of the first things I did to my truck when I got it.

So far, so good......

I have the Pace Edwards lock for my tailgate and I am very happy with it. Wired it into the trucks locks so whenever I lock the truck it locks the tailgate. Not sure if they have one for the 08-09 yet though.
