I have a 1990 Ford F350 with a 460. THe power steering pump cry's! loud every time you turn. I Checked the fluid its full. But the fluid is as dark as nasty transmission fluid. Dark red.
Is the pump toast? Or should I just do a full flush. I dont mind some whine but this amount is a little much.
These pumps are always loud. That's how they sound. Some guys have swapped them for the Saginaw pump.
You should flush it if the fluid is nasty. When you refill it, add some of the friction modifier used in limited slip differentials. That little trick quieted mine down pretty good and has kept it quiet for over 2 years.
Mine did that. There's stuff you can pour in there to clean the pump. pour it in the fluid reservoir, start the truck, then turn the wheel back and forth so it gets in there and goes to work.
To flush, disconnect the return hose, unhook the ignition coil, and crank the motor a few turns with a remote starter while you aim the hose into a bucket to catch the old fluid.
I bought a large sized bottle of steering fluid, enough to do a second rinse using clean fluid before filling.
