if you have to take our that 4 banger I'd take it to the junk yard, they are way under powered. I'd be all for you putting in a diesel but thats probably pretty pricey. I would find the jeeps 4.0 straight 6. They don't die and have a lot of power.
go to the engine section of the classifieds. there is a 2005 3V v10 complete for $1000. its not a diesel but i would think it would supply a jeep with plenty of power.
A 4BT is also a popular diesel swap.
But if you go the V8 gas route, consider a small block Ford...its lighter than the chevy, and...well...its not a chevy.
it is going to be light offroading for now. a 5.0 v8 might make its way in there in the future, if not that a 4.0 I-6. a 4bt cummins would be nice but they are a little more expensive. for now, i just want to get it running so i can start wheelin it.
well the day has finally come to put this rig on the road. i really took some time fixin it but looks like i should be able to wheel this thing this weekend. i just replaced the engine in it with another 4 banger for now. seems to run decent for a 4 cyl. but could used a little xtra top end power but the 33in tires on it i cant complain. ill try to post some pics of it when i take it wheelin.
swap a 4.0 in it, dont put an dime into the 4banger i had an 95 wrangler with the 4banger it wouldent get out of its own way and it was in good running condition with only 80k on the clock and nothing wrong with it my stroker would walk allover that jeep with 20k behind my truck no joke. the 4.0 on the other hand is an good motor i would probably still have my wrangler if it had the 4.0
