i have a 300 inline 6 with about a 190000 miles on it. just today it started bogging down horribly and it seems to me like its only runnin on a couple of the cylinders but thats just how it seems from the lack of power it is producing. is there any way it could be as simple as the fuel filter? or a possibly a chip that i have in it. its an old jet performance chip. maybe a distributor problem? i recently replaced it as well but it was timed and running fine. just not smoothly running by any means.
It would certainly be worth fitting new fuel filter anyway, Also check for restricted exhaust flow. May also be worth checking for any stored error codes and for fuel pressure. Could also be a leaking EGR valve.
Not trying to sound like a jerk here, but you're all over the place with "what ifs".
Many times it's basics, as quicklook suggested. Even if the parts are only 6 months old, it doesn't hurt to check them anyway. I've seen cases of cracked plug insulators that didn't show up until a few months later...
Personally, I would disconnect the battery, take the chip out, reconnect the battery and see what happens.
could a clogged catty converter be causing restricted exhaust flow? how could u tell if it was
One method is, with engine cold, start engine ang get underneath, feel the temperature of the pipe coming from the engine and then the pipe out of the cat. They should both be roughly the same temp if there is good flow thru the cat.
As for the EGR valve pull the vacuum pipe and plug the end of the pipe, does that make any difference? If not you need to apply some vacuum to the EGR valve, either with a vacuum pump or from a vacuum source on the engine. When you apply vacuum does the engine note change? If it does then EGR probably OK, if not then either the valve is stuck open or the diaphram is leaking.
Or you could just pull the EGR valve, clean it and make sure it is seating properly when you re-fit it.
While you are at it pull the vacuum pipe off the fuel pressure regulator and see if there any signs of gas at the pipe, if there are replace the FPR.
