How bad did I mess up, fried PCM?

Hi Everyone,

Over the last week, I have been installing a double DIN stereo and component speakers in my pickup and my truck has been tore all apart. Finally got around to putting the dash back on, and I had the stereo going with the key in the on position, when I did the deadly DP sin, I reconnected my f5 controller, and I realized it shortly after after making the connection. I am guessing I have a fried PCM, as the truck now acts weird when you turn the keys on, sometimes even making the wipers cycle once.

How screwed am I here?

Errrr, well just to trouble shoot can you go get a PCM from the junkyard and try it? I know they are easy to remove, so maybe you can start there. But it does not sound good. speaking of sounding good, how did the stereo install come out?

I don't mean to take over, but I am new to this and plan on getting a DP tuner. What is the issue with having the key on or for that matter in the ignition when messing with the tuner? Sorry for the Hi-jack

Have you tried to take the chip off your PCM and see if that makes a difference?

Wow, thanks for the quick responses, I feared this. By the way, the stereo is sweet, I had to trim my doors to fit 6 1/2" speakers all around, but it was worth it. I was just really excited to get my truck back on the road, but I ended up prolonging it!

Any good places to find a early 99 PCM, AWA3?

Haven't tried chip removal yet, could I have possibly fried the chip and not the pcm?

Cardinal Rule - DO NOT have you key is in the ignition in any position (off, accessory, on, start) when messing with PCM or tuner. Whenever you mess with the PCM, have the keys on the work bench.

There is a great video of the install here:

Diesel Movies - I install a DPTuner F5 chip in my buddies truck. Positions were Stock hi idle 60tow 80econo 120 race 140smoke.

It says at the beginning to not have the keys in the ignition at all, i knew this but was a little to excited about the new stereo.
