Hello, I am new to the site and have just acquired a 2002 F150 XL sport 4.2 5-speed. The truck is in good shape and has only 73K miles. I have noticed that under medium throttle what I call a "stumble" maybe a missfire? does not occour with light or full throttle. the engine appears to be 100% stock including the Motorcraft Coil, Plugs and wires. I have tried to search the forums for related articles before I posted this thread. also I have not seen a CEL. I have only driven this truck for about 100 miles since purchase. Any Ideas and directions would be appreciated, Thankyou.
Hello Mr.R .. Welcome to our world....I had the same issue on my 97 4.2 but it was more pronounced with an Automatic tranny....I had the injectors professionally cleaned, and replaced the fuel filter. The problem for the most part went away.Every now and again,I can feel a slight "buck" but its nowhere near as obvious as it once was.
Welcome to FTE Mr.R.,
Do you know if the fuel filter has been changed? this is a simple item to check. (use a Motorcraft fuel filter)
Could the clutch be in question too? Does it seem to happen at a specific RPM?
I have not had this problem with my 4.2, but I am sure someone will come up with a solution.
BTW, you may want to check your truck with a OBDII scan tool. There "could" be a pending DTC in the computer that is emission system related.
if it was coil or plugs, you would think it would be worse at full throttle. i think the comments of fuel filter and general maint, cleaning IAC, etc might be in order. If it gets too bad, you will get a code.
I am new to this forum and this sort of problem brought me here. If I sit in Park or neutral with my '02 F-150 4.2l 2WD and rev it slowly, when the engine gets between 1400 - 1550 it shudders a bit and then cleans up and runs fine. It will also run fine below this range. I received a few DTC "0305" and an occasional "0181" code and figured if #5 cylinder was misfiring that was probably my problem. I changed the plugs and the wire set (I had 60K on the plugs and 150K on the wires). Truck runs only a bit better but the shudder remains between 1400 - 1550 rpm. I am going to change the fuel filter tomorrow. I have always run injector cleaner/treatment every 3rd or 4th tank full. This truck has been flawless as far as reliability. I was never a Ford fan and I bought this truck because I couldn't get the Dodge I wanted and this Ford was close. As things would have it this is the best vehicle I ever owned and I am 57 years old. I will never own another truck unless it is a Ford.
