I have been wearing a grin ear-to-ear since yesterday so I thought I would share. I finally completed the install and took her for a test drive around the block. It was awesome!!! I have a '56 and been wanting to do this install for some time. A few months back finally got the box and set-up for $40. Was trying to do this on a budget as we all are. From there I started the planning. I wanted to do as much as I could myself while not jeopardizing saftey. I built all the brackets for the box and the pump. I went with the GM pump, even though I have a cleveland in the truck, as it seemed teh easiest with the metric pressure hose. Still finalizing the length of the column but going to finish this off with a new steering wheel so just waiting to find the right one for the truck. Owe a lot of thanks to this forum as it made the job easy. Just took my time and very happy with the results. Have a great weekend!!
I am interested in the details and pics as I will be doing the same shortly with my 53. I have a cleveland too! I would love to see more of your install and how you did it on a budget.
I too would be interested in pictures and a write-up. I have bought the Toyota Box and am in the process of trying to figure out the pump on my Y-Block.
Another one for pictures. I am wanting to put the toyota on my 53 this summer. But need to do it on a budget as I am getting laid off my job after ten years.
I used a 32" Ididit column with a Grant steering wheel and Ididit low profile adapter on my 56. Get the wheel you will be using (I suggest a 15" diameter as the best comprimise between room and visual appearance. I think the more typical 14" aftermarket wheel looks too small in the truck IMHO) and the adapter if needed before deciding on the length.
I took some pics of the bracket for the box. I will try and post. I had some 3/8" steel that I used and ended up with a 'z' shaped bracket that mounted between the frame. I bent the bracket and then welded the seems. The bracket for the pump was purely me starting with cardboard and trying different layouts until I had a shape that lined up to bolt holes in my head and water pump. I used 1/8'' steel to build the pump bracket and part of an alternator bracket so I could adjust if i needed to take it off or to simply get the fan belt on and off. With this conversion I could find no other options in regards to the u-joint($72) CPP or at Midfifty. The power steering pump I actually got from AutoZone for $34(1980 C10 w/350 w/resevoir). In regards to the pitman arm I read the article and built my own. Again used teh 3/8" steal and cut out my shape and then welded in the parts. I definitly took my time in welding and cooling off the metal as to not warp the splines. I got the hoses when I got my box. They were in good shape so I am using for now. This is definitely not a hard job but one that you need to just take your time. Again I will post pictures to my gallery.
Your going to love it, I put mine on last spring for under $100.00.
Mine was real easy, do to having the engine out at the time. I ran an "84" box W/ the toyota vib. damper, made my own bracket and welded the metric pitman spline to the "55" pitman ball.
Used the stock colume and cut that to the length that fit "ME", LOL, the steering shaft fit into the damper perfect and I welded them together (pics in my album) any how, you did a great job and injoy.
and thanks again to all you FTE'ers for all the help on mine.
