welcome to fte.

it is below the drivers side door on the frame rail.

you need a tool to get it off.

do an advanced search in this forum for many tips, and swear words you will need, to change it.

Fill an old coke bottle with water. It makes a good cushion for your neck when you're working underneath the truck, and if you accidentally spill some gas in your eyes you can use it to wash up.

If it's like my '94 you need a big breaking-and-entering-style flathead screwdriver or perhaps a crowbar to pop the filter out of the clamp. Holding on to the input and output tubes while pulling with everything you got helps too. Oh, and you need a little flathead screwdriver to pop the line clamps off too(you gotta do that first). What websthes said about having water nearby too...
Other than that it's pretty simple.

you need a tool to remove it.

before you start go buy one at the auto parts store.

the little clamps on the outside are just backup.

If you remove the fuel filter with a big screwdriver on a 94 you are an idiot. There are internal clips in there that hold everything together. THATS why yo u need the special tool. Youve probably wrecked yours and i would be very surprised if things dont start leaking under there.

I'm sure he was talking about getting the filter out of the clamp that holds it to the frame, not the fuel lines.. The lines do take a special tool...

Also to the original poster, be sure to relieve the pressure on the fuel rail, if you don't it is almost impossible to disconnect the fuel line, and you WILL get sprayed with fuel if you don't..

Big screwdriver for wedging the filter out of the clamp. the little line clamps popped off with a smaller screwdriver. I didn't see anything that needed a special tool on mine. The lines just push on to either end of the filter and the little clamps hold the line on the filter.
Apology accepted.

It can also help if you unbolt the clamp from the frame and get it out of the way so you aren't scraping the hell out of your hands while trying to get it off. It will make the lines easier to remove if you make sure the lines are clean where they go into the filter and spray a little penetrating oil in there. Also push the lines towards the filter before you insert the disconnect tool. Also, on my '96 the fuel filter is just barely in front of the front fuel tank, in fact damn near behind it...

p.s. the new filter is really easy to install

I normally invite my wife to join me, and then I lay my head in her lap. She runs her fingers through my hair, talks to me softly, sings to me, hands me wrenches, and the bad words go away.

How do you relieve the pressure from the fuel line? I pushed the inhertia button inside the cab. Is there something else?

Take off the passenger side kick panel. Pop the red inertia switch button to the up position while truck is running. The truck will stall and you have just relieved your fuel pressure. Some might also recommend removing the fuel cap also. After you are done making repairs, push the button back down and replace fuel cap. Cycle the key to run a few times to build fuel pressure back, and the truck should start no problem.
